The Origin of Lipizzaner Horses (according to the Film “Crimson Tide”)

The infamous Lipizzaner debate from the film Crimson Tide. (1995)

It took me a while but here it is: the famous scene where Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington talk about Slovenia’s national horse, the Lipizzaner. (The name comes from the Slovenian town of Lipica) There are still occasional arguments about the origin of the horse but it’s usually between Austria, Slovenia and Italy.

In their goof section, IMDb refers to this scene as “incorrectly regarded as a goof” because:

While the horses take their name from the fact that the stud farm where they are bred is located in the village Lipica (in Italian: Lipizza), near Trieste in Slovenia, today all Lipizzaners trace to six stallions, all with Andalusian (Spain) blood.

That’s just goofy, to be honest. It would be like two people arguing about whether President Bush is from Connecticut or Texas, and me pointing out that, no, technically all people trace their origins to Africa. Ergo: he’s African. I would be right in a way, but also very, very wrong. Sometimes it’s possible to be both. And this is one of those times.

NOTE: I’ve decided to slowly give up on YouTube, which seems to be circling the toilet bowl these days, and instead use local video-sharing website MojVideo. If you can read basic Slovene, consider checking it out!

lol, I forgot how funny this was. Two ruff men, hatred between them so high it’s nearly homoerotic, with dead serious faces, going: “I’m wrong!”; “I’m wrongerer!”; “I’m wrongerest, you dickhead!”

I always thought the Spain thing in this movie was associated with the name of the Vienna Spanish Riding School, and Portugal was just the conviently closely located neighbour… The Andalusians thing seems a bit far-fetched, especially considering most of the original stallions were Neapolitans, anyway :)

Actually the Lippezaner breed has some Bosnian antecedants, and it’s really obvious when you take a look at a Bosnian Mountain Pony, which looks like a small Thoroughbred, sometimes they are white, check out the one in ‘Iznad iz krajolika’ that the FedEx delivery girl rides!

The good dr. filomena could shed some light on the issue - if memory serves, she’s somewhat of an expert on the issue.

@Cornelius: Pass me the popcorn, this could become interesting :D

Hey, what does “to circle the toilet bowl” mean? That it’s going to get flushed into the sewery soon maybe?

I’m eagerly awaiting the doc’s expert opinion.

Christian: I’m not sure I get you. Carniola also runs on Wordpress. I just paste the “embed” code — same as with YouTube. Do you mean a plugin of some kind? Otherwise it should work. I’m living proof. :)

Borut: You got it. It’s not in the sewer yet, but seems to be heading in that direction.

Say it ain’t so, Gene! And is he saying, “LipiNzzaner” (with an extra “n”)?

Thanks for the heads-up about mojvideo.

Oh my… I can’t listen to the clip right now as I’m paying attention to an interesting presentation of investment possibilities in the City of Ljubljana, the “Engine City for European Cohesion” at Union Hotel… very interesting, honest! ;-) (Hey maybe should post a blog entry on it later on…)

However, I do remember the way said part of the movie raised every hair on my scalp, body and even bathroom floor. twitch, twitch, twitch

The Lipizzaner breed of horse, which is among the most ancient ones in the world (the absolute record being held by the unbeatable Arabian horses) and goes back over half a millenium, is the product of sturdy local Karstic mares, refined by the introduction of “warmer-blooded” Spanish stallions and later on by an Arabian stallion as well.

Over the last 20 years or so, attempts have been made to modernize the breed so as to make it more competitive in modern sports. Dressage and show jumping calls for a different body type than would be required in a 18th Century battle horse.

Thankfully, the attempts have maily been given up and the value of the breed as it is has been recognized before they completely ruined it and turned it into a “ne tič ne miš”.

The only real Lipizzaners that may have the letter L branded in their cheeks are ones from the Lipica area as their bone and hoof structure is affected by their nutrition, i.e. the lime-stone-heavy grass and hay from the Karst. (Until said grass has to give way to golf courses, that is… she said, ever so non-cynically.)

Well, so much for now, in short.
    Not.
    Yikes.
Can you tell this is a topic close to heart…

@Christian: MojVideo and YouTube react badly to wordpress visual editor, because it “cleans up” the HTML code.

In order to display either on WP, you must edit your post in “plain text”.

    @pengovsky
Thanks, but I’m talking of the free use of wordpress … to se pravi without your own webspace.
They don’t allow javascript. So there is only a limited choice of videoplattform … Youtube, Dailymotion, Googlevideo.

Oh, I thought I posted that comment already. Anyways. I use wordpress.com … and don’t have my own webspace. They don’t allow javascript. They just support some (Googlevideo, Youtube, Dailymotion …).
    Thanks anyways ;)
