Slovenia is S’lovely

slovely.jpg
One of the new Slovenia logos designed by American Paula Scher. [source]

Condé Nast Traveler asked six designers to each rebrand a country of his or her choice for its September issue, and Paula Scher selected Slovenia for her effort. “I’ve been to Slovenia twice and loved it. But most Americans don’t know what or where it is, which is something I wanted to address” says Scher.”

Her creations can be seen here. What do you think?

(For reference, this post has a collection of some of the new official logos.)

I love the “You DO know where it is!” ha ha

Hmm. I’m not sure everybody would like the “attached to Italy” ones, but it is indeed an effective way to say “you DO know where it is”.

@Fabio: what’s the other possibility? To be part of former Yugoslavia! And this is, we don’t like even more.
We have seen a lot exploring of love in Slovenia, but I don’t remember a better way. So, I LIKE it.

Me too. It was just a minor perplexity of mine.

This whole slogan thing is perplexing. Why didn’t they just stick with the first one: On the sunny side of the Alps. That told approximately where SLO was and included “sun” and “alps”, words with heavy tourist appeal.

All in all, the campaign is playing a bit too much on shallow stereotypes for my taste, and doesn’t seem to put too much effort in presenting the country as an independent entity - it’s either “the country next to Italy” or “the developed Eastern Europe country”, but then, the end consumer might not mind that. We are talking Conde Nast here, afterall.

Yes, Fabio, you made a good point.
I think she really likes Slovenia,
and her logo is much better then the slovene one, but this appendix-to-Italy
thing leaves a bad feeling in the stomac.
I live near the slo-italian border and the memories of the persecution of the Slovene ppl under Italian Fascism
    are not forgotten yet.
It’s a thing of the past, all the nations were cruel to other nations at some point, I’m sure,
so I’m speaking about a feeling this picture awakes in me, not some rational explanation against it.

    @Aja
I know what you mean but I think that Scher’s logo neatly resolves the Slovenia/Slovakia issue. Of course, Scher
could have used Austria as a reference point instead of Italy but that would
probably leave a bad feeling in the stomac of many Carithian Slovenes so I guess there’s really no solution that would keep everybody happy.

On the sunny side of the alps is one I personally like aswell. The only problem: running the same campaign 10 years in a row becomes somehow borint.

I like the ones without Italy more than the plain sLOVEnia stuff. Somehow I just like it more that way. Attaching Italy is not that good in my opinion. For one thing Slovenia isn’t some sort of mini-Italy or some Italian province that became independent. Slovenia is something on its own - why attach it to anything? For another it may puzzle some people, because they didn’t know that Czech Republik has to be somewhere near Italy. If anyone becomes interested in Slovenia because of any campaign, he/she will quickly find out where it is. If not - well, too much really stupid tourists cruising around don’t increase safety on the roads anyway. What I liked best so far to show where Slovenia is, is the intro of Slovenski magazin - I liked the way it was done at the beginning of the shows I watched ages ago.

@Dietmar: Re Slovenian Magazine intro: is that a video with string music, including waterfalls, Lipizzaners, etc?

I think we’re quite lucky to have such lame designers - I mean the ones who create the logos, otherwise we have a lot of excellent designers -
because mass turism isn’t exactly a bliss

I dislike all the attempts to “highlight” the word “love” in Slovenia. Is the name of the country really pronounced SLUV-nia? Also, we we get people looking for”hidden” words and use logos like “S’LOVEly”, how long before they find “SLOVEN” in Slovenia, and read the logo as “SLOVENly”? Stupid idea. Also, turning Slovenia into a province of Italy is a REALLY BAD idea: what is it, 1942 all over again?
Slovenians are so worried about potential tourists thinking the country is somewhere near Minsk, but Slovenia has to promote what the wonderful place it is, not ride on Italy’s (or some other country’s) coattails. Scher’s view of Slovenia is typically American: Wow! It’s near Italy (modern, Western, desirable tourist destination)! Wow! it’s not grungy and gray (like I, in my stuck-in-the-Cold War mentality, imagine Eastern Europe to be). I wish people would stop pandering to the lowest common AMERICAN denominator.

@Peng: The part I am thinking of is as far as I can remember a globe showing europe turning and Slovenia zooming out, a little bit like the pic at the top of the page I linked above. Only somehow better looking than on the homepage.

Didn’t you mention someone proposed “Slovenia - don’t go there”? I think there would be dialogue that could be fun to watch… (something like this is what Slovenia will make of you)

I like the logos. Even Italy does not bother me.

It reminds me of something cute, cuddly and small…which Slovenia is in a way especially in comparison to Italy(wanted to be seen like that or not). And I don’t mind DO knowing where it is by putting it next to the Italian boot.

I like the slogan I feel Slovenia aswell and we could attach that s’lovley to it so we’d get:

I feel Slovenia, (because it’) s’lovley

And why not use all the slogans we have? A conutry is obviously more than you can tell in one word or sentance.

    I am just thinking here…

According to Scher’s bio, she designed the graphic identities for Citibank and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, among others.
