The Society for Slovene Studies

The official logo of the Society for Slovene Studies.

Brian recently dropped me a line to tell me about the Society for Slovene Studies. They’re a non-profit organization with about 300 members whose mission is “fostering closer communication among scholars interested in Slovene studies.”

They’re apparently looking to drum up some new members; the annual fee is $20 ($5 for students) and includes a subscription to the Slovene Studies journal. I’ll probably join once I figure out an easy way to pay the fee. It seems like a good enough cause. For one thing, the group is looking for some support for a study center in Cleveland and the idea of them luring unsuspecting victims into learning Slovene appeals very much to my sadistic nature.

The SSS has lots of information (and some good resources) on their official page here.

Does the $20 spot cover beer, or is there an extra charge for that? And is the organization housed in a quaint old building with a view of the ever-flushing Lake Erie?
Just wondering what I’d be seeing as I sip my beer and think Slovene thoughts.

Tomorrow’s the European day of languages and two cute brochures on Slovene have been published for the occasion.

Watch out! That Society for Slovene Studies is “notorious in the opinion of many for its Marxist-Leninist orientation.” According to this commenter, its editors idolize Stalin and Mao!

Jean: I just ruptured my appendix laughing at that link. Thank you…

Ooh, sorry to hear about your appendix, Michael! You might want to travel to Costa Rica for your appendectomy–I hear they have better health care there than in Slovenia or the USA.

By pure coincidence, moments before I surfed over here (after being out of town and off line for the past few days), I got an email with that amusing link from the editor mentioned, who, I can assure you, is neither an ignoramus, nor an idolizer of Mao/Stalin, nor even an Austrian. (I am, however, proud to call him my comrade! :)) I thought you might appreciate the extra insight into the SSS.

Wow, thanks for this one. I herd something of it before, but I had no idea the Society is still alive and active.

    Hi,

I can’t accept SSS membership dues. Registration forms (www.arts.ualberta.ca/~ljubljan/reg_form.html) and dues should be sent to: Dr. Carole Rogel, Treasurer, SSS, 205 N. Delta Dr., Columbus, OH 43214 USA

    Best wishes,
    Don
