Two tarok cards by concentration camp inmate Boris Kobe.
BoingBoing recently posted this outstanding link about Boris Kobe, “a Slovenian architect and painter who became a political prisoner in the concentration camp of Allach, a sub-camp of Dachau, near Munich, Germany.”
He illustrated a series of cards for tarok, a game that is still very popular here and that is, it should be noted, entirely distinct from tarot divination cards. (If you’re curious about the tremendously complicated and arcane rules of Slovenian tarok, this site explains everything.)
Kobe’s cards show scenes of life and death in the camp, with the mond featuring the liberation of Dachau and the Slovenian Yugoslavian flag triumphant.
Kobe returned to Slovenia after the war and, among other things, worked on the restoration of the Ljubljana Castle.
You can see the full set of cards and read a little bit about Kobe here.

Pretty cool, except that the flag is actually Yugoslavian. Rdeca bela plava je Titova zastava, rdeca plava bela je Titova kamela.
Crap, I thought (without checking or utilizing any mnemonics) that it was the SR Slovenia one. My bad.
@crni: “rdeča, bela, plava…” Haven’t heard that one in a while
@Michael M.: Very cool! Until now I only knew of Hinko Smrekar’s Slovenian tarok cards.
Fascinating stuff, Michael. Thanks for sharing.
peng: Is there anywhere one can see Hinko’s cards? The name doesn’t ring a bell..
See Smrekarjev tarok for presentation.
No worries, Mike. Just thought I’d point it out, I was feeling very pedantic at the time. There’s another, newer version of Slovenski Tarok out, too.

They are all of them outstanding, didn’t know card motives can be such an artistic challenge.
Cool game…sounds complicated. I’m predicting that it will be a while before it makes its way to Vegas!
