Damn, I’m in a tight spot. I got a notification yesterday from my host saying that I’m way over my GPU limit. And why? I don’t know. According to their GPU FAQ, it’s exceedingly rare:
Based on the analysis of over 10,000 random sites, we emphatically show that the vast majority of sites (99.97%) run perfectly fine, even under serious traffic, and never exceed their GPU allocation.
Not only did I exceed it, I exceeded it by 150%. I’m currently communicating with them and will try to beg for amnesty and find out what went wrong. My guess is that some script is causing the problem or perhaps a Wordpress plug-in. It’s true that I had a major surge in traffic this month — thanks to him — but the additional million hits in March didn’t put a dent in, say, my bandwidth limit. In fact, it’s because of my high bandwidth limit (500 GB/month) that I thought my days of worrying were over. That’s partly why I was so surprised by this notification. Suddenly I’m in a tight spot.
To make matters worse, I recently lost my prized webmaster and consigliere Don Heck, who is on sick leave. So I turn to you:
1) Can anyone recommend a good host, in case things go sour with my current one?
2) Can anyone recommend a web-genius, who can help do some technical fixes to this site? There are some major malfunctions that still need to be sorted out.
If you like, you can also write me an e-mail. The address is on the about page.
Damn, I’m in a tight spot.
Have a great weekend!

Hell, I was asleep for a split second, and thought that they were saying you used too much their servers’ graphic cards, (also GPU).
About web hosting, I like to do it all on my own, less problems. So cannot recommend any, at least non-Spanish. But in case of sudden need (they decide to pull the plug on you before you change) I can set up an emergency small mirror.
I don’t know in detail which are those major issues you’re having, but anything that can be done on my part to help will be done.
Well, maybe you should try Godaddy or Hostgator. You might consider this:
Premium Plan:
• 200 GB Space • 2,000 GB Transfer
for a little less than 15 usd/month.
I thin that extra traffic has something to do with you being published in Joker
What a nice gesture by the Spanish guy.
Hey Michael, a bit off topic, but would you know if you can buy Yams or Sweet Potatoes in Maribor?? Strange question I know, but its part of my diet and I can’t remember if they sell them there, at least no one in my family has ever used them in cooking. Thanks. I wish I could help you with computer issues, but you’d rather have a smart monkey help then me.
In case of changing the hosting provider, I recommend HostGator (www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml), which is (at least for me) very reliable. The also have THE BEST help support (Online support chat 24/7; you know, the slave force from India), and they really help you to resolve any issues if they occur. Maybe it’s not “most bandwidth” and “most space” around thingie, but I simply love their support. So maybe you should give them a try. Good luck with everything, long live the Carniola!
Hi,
well, for the past few years I’ve been running all my sites on Dreamhost and so far have been extremely happy with them. Lots of space and bandwidth (i have at the moment around 250gb disk and a bit over 1.6TB of bandwidth - so it’s really not an issue.) They do have issues sometimes, but when they do they are very forthcoming and transparent about it. Which I have to say I prefer a lot of more than to what I used to got - “what, what problem? we ? never!”
One issue I have with them is with running Ruby on Rails which doesn’t work too well, but PHP stuff like Wordpress seem to be running just dandy. There are lots of discount codes on the web for it, and you can get about $97 off in the first year. My code is called (not surprisingly) BUDDHA.
