I’ve caught something. I’m not sure what. All I know is that I don’t want it.
Right now my symptoms are mild (sore throat, weak joints) but I have a feeling they might get worse. In the meantime, here are the suggestions I heard today from various people about how to get better, in the order in which I heard them: (Note that not one person was joking; these are all serious suggestions.)
1) “Gargle with pear schnapps.”
2) “Have of shot of slivovitz.”
3) “Cook some hot tea, then mix in some honey and slivovitz.”
4) “Drink a really cold beer.”
5) “Try some cooked whiskey.”
Notice a pattern? How come no one ever advises me to get some rest? Or to take some anti-flu medicine? I ended up trying option three, but it only made me feel worse.
At home I took a shot of Angal, a locally produced sore throat medicine. And you know what? It worked great.

Hey, Michael… my wife suspects that your local remedy may have a bit of slivovitz in it. Did you read the label? Get some rest and feel better soon.
On a serious note: “Angal S” does wonders. I caught exactly the same thing you have (same simptoms) and I’ve been using a combination of Angal S and Neoangin during the day and whisky in the evening. Beer is also fine, but not wine (it makes things even worse).
On another serious note: All of the above remedies actually work (well, beer at least doesn’t make things worse). The trick is in disinfection of throat and numbing the pain, which as is happens is exactly what Angal S does

Hm, no one told me to drink sliwowitz here in Germany, but guess what? There are only one or two of my various medicines that have “Contains no sugar or alcohol” written on them. The rest is sweet, makes me all woozy and funny…
If it is a cold, and so a virus, then the virus will be in the cells, so to kill the “virus” you have to kill the cells. Guess Sliwowitz will do the job quite fine. Whether the Sliwowitz will actually reach all the infected cells is doubtfull though.
@EdW: Sliwovitza can do anything. One reason for cold war lasting as long as it did is the fact that neither MacGyver neither James Bond ever used Slivowitza to concoct some elaborate escape plan which would take down scores of enemies in one single stroke

Not having access to Angal S nor Slivovitz, I turned to Duvel last night, when I was feeling exactly the same as you did Michael. Worked fine as well. Might even have worked better if it were Macallan 15 yrs old Fine Oak, I’m sure. The soothing noisescapes Sophia produced at their gig last night might have helped to prepare my body, too…

This should be no surprise - the humble little country of ours is actually one of the hardest drinking places on Earth.

Our registered pure alcohol consumption per capita is around 11 liters. Unregistered consumption (home-made wine & hard stuff) is estimated to around 5 liters. Total figure adds up to around 16 liters per capita.
Over a third of adult males drink in quantities which endanger their health.
Around 10% of adult males are alcoholics.
Drinking & driving is considered a perfectly normal & acceptable behaviour in most parts of the country.
Etc etc.

I swear by my granny’s traditional hot tea with honey and whiskey (and a dash of paprika if you are really trying to kick something’s ass). Never tried the Slivovica cure, though I could see that work in burning the enemy out.
On the downside, I am currently afflicted with some kind of flu or food poisoning, so Slivovica will not be of help. On the upside, I may just get a tour of the Slovenian health care system if this persists! I like to be able to say that I really get to know the culture and institutions of the places I live in.
Slivo is alright for colds, I use it it’s available in the Yakima Gulag State Liquor Store. You can’t get hard stuff in a grocery store here. The other thing that works is garlic, so does horse radish or wasabi, the Japanese variety of horseradish. I tend to crave horse radish at times, it’s wierd, like the way one might crave chocolate.
Chicken soup even the dreadful canned stuff is clinically proven to help.

But that Macallan has won my favour now. I usually don’t drink alcy at home (and I mean DO NOT drink, as in ‘at all’), but about once a week I have a glass of the guid stuff when I have it around. *Cough* I feel a cold coming on; I think it’s high time I poured one… 
…which must be immediately followed by another one, just to check on the first one, why it hadn’t reported back…

Speaking of traditional alcohol-based cures, what do you guys take for an upset stomach? My father swears by pelinkovac, whether he needs it or not…
Pelinkovec indeed, perhaps a Jaegermeister or Unterberg or even a Fernet Branca, if you can get your hands on it.
