The Predjamska Castle. (source)
Jonson over at Metafilter recently put together a nice post about Slovenia’s predjamski castle, including a link to this great photoset on Flickr.
If you don’t know it, here is the wonderful story behind the castle and its besiegement.
And needless to say, BoĊĦtjan has tons of gorgeous panoramas from within its guts.
Somewhat related: A cave house in Turkey; A cave church in Germany.

Has anyone visited these caves in Western India?

These “caves” were used as Buddhist monasteries in 200 B.C. The carvings and fresco style paintings date from that era.
Mind you, everything has been carved out of solid rock, no bricks or mortar anywhere.
The Elephanta Caves are relatively modern (600 CE).

But even these are sculptural marvels.
Both sites have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Hey - didn’t know about that church here in Germany.
Predjamski Grad however was actually the reason, why I started learning Slovene
- Back then I had a penpal via eMail who told me, she went to school in Postojna. One evening I was bored and visited Google picture search to see whether there are some pictures from there. The first thing I saw was Predjamski Grad and I thought that looks so cool, I want to go there. That year I hadn’t got enough money, but I noticed that a Slovene course startet at the Folk High School. Couldn’t be wrong to speak some words of their language when going there - so I signed up for the course. Somehow it was fun and I continued, but when it comes to Slovene grammar, I’m not sure whether it would be better do see a psychiatrist
Ah, the church in Idar-Oberstein, the centre of semi-precious stones… I’d say nice but not as interesting as Predjamski grad…
Ah, the S/M castle. Every room in the castle (including the priests chamber) is in some way connected to the torture chamber
Cornelius, you say it as if it’s wrong. Or that a castle shouldn’t be constructed that way. My apartment is like that. You gotta come check it out sometime. (But don’t tell anyone you’re coming. I don’t want people looking for you if you happen to go missing…)
Hippie: Seriously cool pictures!
There many years ago was a wonderful article about Cappodocia, where there are cave houses in Turkey. It was once a Christian area, and many of the caves have Christian frescos from an early period of Christian history.
Not to forget Ostrog monastery a famous Serbian monostery!
Seriously though, that’s one cool castle. It was fascinating when I first saw it as a kid and there had been almost no renovation done and it’s even better now that it’s been almost completely renovated. Too bad you can’t see the inside of The Toilet of Doom, though
I would say that in english it should be Predjama Castle and not predjamska. Trivium, the new english metal band recorded videos at Predjamski grad and Postojnska Jama. They are the new Iron Maiden apparently.
