Thank You, Tolar, and Good Night

An RTV report on how well Slovenes know their tolars. (Slovene only)

The tolar is now officially pecunia non grata in Slovenia. Back in October, I did a post about the fact that many people I knew had no idea who was on the tolar bills. That post inspired an RTV reporter to hit the streets and do a short story about it — you can watch it above. (In Slovene only, I’m afraid.)

She later told me that no one she spoke to in the city that day knew all of the bills; but then again, neither did she.

(Thanks Jasmina!)

Funny, most of them knew about Cankar on the 10.000 SIT bill straightaway… My right guess would have been the 10 SIT and the 1000 SIT bill. I hope this is not relevant information about anyone :-)

We were looking forward to collecting some SIT before the change over to the euro…maybe we’ll get lucky and find someone with a few of the old bills to get rid of… Are you seeing any indication of euro-inflation in these early days?

I’ve noticed some minor changes. My morning coffee, for example, went from 92 cents to one euro overnight. That kinda hurt. Otherwise I would guess that prices have more or less stayed stable.

And I’m sure you’ll run across some tolars somewhere. Give them my love when you do, especially Vega on the 50-tolar bill. He was my favorite.

I think the euro is a travesty and you watch, there will be euro inflation, there always is.
