How to Convert Tolars to Euros

euros-to-tolars.jpg
In the eyes of the Lord, 50 tolars is 50 eurocents.

Rok recently posted this sign from inside Maribor’s glorious Franciscan Church. It lists the suggested donation for candles, in which Slovenian tolars are generously matched to eurocents one-to-one. In truth, 50 tolars is only 21 cents. Therefore, the church put a 138% mark-up on the euro price. As you can see, someone has scrawled “What kind of math is this!!” at the bottom of the sign. What kind of math, indeed.

Here’s hoping other Slovenian businesses don’t follow the church’s lead on January 1st.

(Thanks Rok!)

As allways, the religious assholes are trying to steal more money.

I’d call it creative accounting… And afterall, it is all done in the name of “He who is”, whose son taught us that we must foresake our earthly possesions and embrace his love. The priets of His church have just taken it upon themselves to be burdened by the sins of money so we - the poor, humble flock - can enjoy the freedom of spirit. Don’t you get it :D

Or the Euro price is for bloody foreigners… till January.

This is a very innovative approach to steal money the noble way. :( Bastards… :( :(

As I have written: Slovenians are good listeners but have big problems reading. The church notice is an appeal for donation - It’s not the price of goods. You may, for example, even after the January 14th still make donations of 50 SIT.

What’s the Big Surprise? As we all know, Creative Accounting (Pengovsky!? I thought this was solely an American expression) was invented by an Italian monk a while back. The Church was already quite busy into the quite profitable Soul Business and needed to minimize internal theft and faithfully track, through the double-entry system, the path to salvation of its contributors. This Tolar to EU conversion rate is just another page of the Church’s Fiduciary Brotherhood.
It’s the way that the Church has owned the most expensive real estate in NYC for over 100 years. None of these jokers would have ever considered working for Enron. Not enough profit.

I wouldn’t trust anyone using that font anyway! :P

Aneqdote, it could have been worse. The font could have been comic sans.

I’m not a big fan of musicals, nor should you be, but you should definitely see The Producers, where Mel Brooks coined the term “creative accounting.”

Bla bla bla stealing money. This is the suggested amount for donation, so you can put in however much you want. They don’t need to calculate things accurately for that.

Patrick: Although Wikipedia states that Creative Accounting was first used in Mel Brooks’ film “The Producers”, I would tend to disbelieve that since the person stating as such is a movie/theater critic, not an accoutant/accounting professor. Although, Creative Accounting was certainly practiced well, up to a point, in “The Producers”, I’d heard the term resulted from the debacle that was the original Ponzi Scheme, even though accounting was a minimal part of the charade.

@crni: Why not put 100 SIT then for ammount in SIT? I mean I know 0.50 cents seems small, but it would be fairer to put 0.2 cents, don’t you think?

by pengovsky on December 18, 2006 at 7:31 pm

  • 15

Ooops, for cents, read euros. Sorry

by pengovsky on December 18, 2006 at 7:32 pm

  • 16

Hey, the point is, you can put in however the hell much you want, so “fair” doesn’t even come into play.

Ah, the Church. One of the oldest criminal organizations on this small planet of ours…

by Dr. Rosenfeld on December 18, 2006 at 8:40 pm

  • 18

@crni: I know that. That’s not the problem. The thing is that the suggested amount in euros is 138 % higher that in SIT

by pengovsky on December 18, 2006 at 8:56 pm

  • 19

The suggested amount is just a suggestion. It´s up to you if, and how much you donate.

If you don´t understand it, just ignore it, or give them 50 SIT plus 0,50 EUR.

I find it really ridiculous how long some (pengovsky) is willing argue over a little thing which he or she doesn´t understand.

by ervinator on December 18, 2006 at 9:12 pm

  • 20

No no, you got it all wrong. If you donate in SIT, you get a discount, otherwise the full price is 0,50 €.
