André 3000 wrapped in Croatian national colors. (source)
You really have to hand it to Croatia when it comes to branding. They’re the only ones who escaped from the dull, pan-Slavic-with-a-red-star monotony of Yugoslav symbols to emerge with instantly recognizable national colors. Say what you want, but the red & white checkers are distinctive, unlike Slovenia’s seal — or any of the miserable flags that have been proposed by the stylistically handicapped over the years to try to make Slovenia stand apart. The most-recent suggestion was so universally loathed that it was shelved, and the whole idea had to be put on ice.
In the meantime, famous rappers are wrapping themselves up in Croatian scarves. A new fashion trend may be on the horizon…

Yep… In that department it’s hats off to them. While the highpoint of a social event is when a kid from Bar attends, or Natalija Verboten makes a “suprise” appearance (no offense, Michael!), the Croats know what a propper show is.
Oh and I reaaaly like the phrase “stylistically handicapped. A lovely euphemism.
Darn you! I was gonna write this post but you beat me to it!
Might I also point out that Andre 3000 is famous for his funky fashion sense.
@Poulette: I never doubted your fashion awareness, but seriously… Red-and-white chess-board around one’s neck hardly qualifies as fashion. What’s the pick-up line then? “Hey, baby doll! Wanna play some menstrual chess?”
I suffered through the Carie sequel some time ago, and the end scene, set into that notorios timeframe of “one year after the events” had the main support actor now advance to university. There was a brief shot of him in his dorm room, and on one wall there was a huge Croatian flag… I think more than trying to express the character’s national identity (he was some WASP John Smith or smth), the national identity of one of the set hands came into expression here…
The Croatian coat of arms and conversely, the flag itself definitely is unusual and simple enough to be succesful at this kind of virus distribution. Something I’ve always envied. That, and Dubrovnik. If only Slovenes could get our hands on Dubrovnik somehow, that’d be sweet.
Michael,
Hope you don’t mind that I borrowed this link from you (full credit given!).
How is it these guys look better in the national garb than the natives do? Plus, he gets away with the melding of Mexican and Croatian! If a white guy tries this, even a Croatian white guy, the descriptive would be Kakav seljak!!?!
A great catch using your trolling ways.
The ORIGINAL Bosnian flag escaped t he panSlavic pan Balkans red white and blue as well then certain people objected to the grb with the lilies for silly reasons that were totally illogical, so now BiH has a flag better suited to some banana republic than to a European nation.
Still the color combo is there, and it’s not red white and blue.
Actually among Blacks Andre 3000 would not have gotten away with that look when I was growing up! the friendliest response would have been ‘Huh?!? WTF?!?’ and more frequent response would have been far closer to ‘Kakav seljak!’ only not worded so politely.
Dontcha be dissin’ my nigga’s bling bling!
I din’t know anything about football, but the only uniform that I could recognize instantly at the World Cup was the croatian (pretty good looking guys by the way!)
yes absolutly good looking guys! and yes instant recognition!
