A Zastava on the Beach

Look out behind you!

I love this commercial for the Zastava 101. Instead of appearing majestic and serene, it just looks like the car is out of control and about to run over a hapless cellist. If there were still commercials like this, I’d consider watching more television. It’s like a proto-version of Christine.

Extra super happy time fun bonus: Another funny Zastava 101 ad.

(Thanks Barbara!)

Now that you mention it, there is something vaguely Jaws-like about this commercial.

Also, using the words “beauty”, “perfection”, and “Zastava” in the same sentence is quite a feat.

Now, my childhood memories definitely include Zastava-owners and I don’t think they are telling the truth in that second commercial: in my time Zastava 101 couldn’t even make the gentle slopes of Prekmurje in a snowy winter, let alone the real thing…

Actualy I think (pls corect me if I’m wrong)that this commercial was shown in Cannes at advertising festival that year…or something like that. I just know that it was realy succesfull commercial and I even think I heard it won some prizes.
I won’t comment what I think of the car though :)…but everybody that lived in ex YU at those times have to confess that it was a legend this car…a true legend.

My family owned more than one Zastava 101 and I must say it brings out memories. Zastava combined with sea makes me think of air-conditionless hours, spent on the road, at the back seat of that same Zastava…it was far from perfect or beautiful but it was pure Zastava…and it got us there in the end:) My dad (relentlessly) sold his last Zastava 6 years ago, he still holds it in his heart, while it is still driving on the streets of a serbian town. Zastava legend lives on:)

Barbara, my family owned a series of Opels, and I can tell you from experience: if driven into a brook, it will survive. You will survive. Your fahter’s bank account will survive… :-D
