Part One: From Dubrovnik to Split.
Part 2: From Split to Ljubljana, which “feels Austrian” and “like Salzburg without Mozart.”
Part 3: From Lipica to Bled to the Alps.
The above clips are all from über-nerd Rick Steves’ travel show, specifically episode 112: Slovenia and Croatia. The entire script for the show can be read here.
The audio is occasionally out of synch, but not catastrophically so. Big, big thanks to the mighty Klemen for digging these up!
(Thanks Klemen!)

Mick, enjoyed the videos!
Michael,
You (correctly) labelled Mr. Steves as “über-nerd“, but, like other nerdy folks like, say, Bill Gates or those Google guys, it’s absolutely amazing how much power he wields. Travel agencies here regularly have to deal with requests such as “I want to RickSteves (it’s become an action verb now) Rome & Florence.” or “Yeah, RickSteves my stay in Slovenia”, which means maximum involvement with locals and with local color with minimal economic outlay. You probably are well aware of tour guide in Italy and in Germany advertising themselves as “RickSteves” sight tours.
I’m waiting to hear, “Pimp my vacation, RickSteves style”
Part One, 1:21
Did he say Lube-ja-wana?
He said Lube-ur-anal
Good to know I can explain the pronunciation of Prešeren’s name by using “pressuring” as comparison.
Oh and Ljubljana ain’t nothing like Salzburg (with or without Mozart). It feels much more alive.
I always thought his book “Europe Through the Backdoor” was some sort of gay travel guide.
Michael, you are welcome!
You must be aware that this video is 5 years old, many things changed since then, but it is fun to watch, though.
Interesting, he really nailed it. Little cheerfull nation. Fun to watch.
I wonder if, then and nowadays, they FEEL sLOVEnia.
*sniff, sniff* Is this homesickness than I’m feeling?
the videos are nice, I liked the horses! I liked the walk on the walls of Dubrovnik and nice footage of Split. He made sure to show some war damage.
Hm, seems to be a very reliable source - according to my knowledge, the Austrian state Tirol is not in Germany. He did “Germany: Munich, Bavaria and Tirol …”
Oh, and his guide “Best of Eastern Europe 2006″ includes Vienna. I mean, I kind of agree, but noooooot really.
Especially since it says “Rick Steves’ Best of Eastern Europe offers a select coverage of Rick’s favorite destinations in the most enjoyable and accessible countries of the former Communist Bloc.”
Wow, Dubrovnik looked like a ghost town back then. Nowadays it’s almost as crowdy as the crossing in front of Shibuya station in Tokyo on most days.

Funny how he slams Croatia’s communist era hotels, and yet in Split he obviously stayed in the king of all Croatian decrepit communist-era hotels, Hotel Marjan.
And he’s been had with that war monument. The reason why the parts around Plitvice were bombed in the first place is because the majority of people there before the war were Serbs. The reason why the houses are still in a state of disrepair is that these Serbs are somewhat reluctant to go back there. It’s a wasteland now - almost nobody lives there. So much for Croatians living there since the dawn of time…
I loved it how he threw in burek without any sort of explanation whatsoever. Let the would-be tourists find out for themselves.
This is actually a pretty standard Slovenia-Croatia tour nowadays. I’ve been to a gazzilion of ones just like it.
novala: Well, it was “Red Vienna,” after all, once upon a time.
I can’t even think of an excuse for the Tirol thing, though. That’s just sloppy.
Thanks for the clarification, Cornelius.
“like Salzburg without Mozart.” … das ist der schlechteste Witz den ich gehört hab. Mozart in allen Ehren, aber wozu braucht Lj Mozart? Und mit Salzburg muss sich Lj auch nicht vergleichen lassen. Lj spielt in seiner eigenen Liga.
I guess this is pretty much what you always see on travel shows when they visit slovenia, but you can’t get enough of it…
:homesickness
Na zvidenja :-p
