That was Something Special

Anže Kopitar’s NHL debut. Click play to watch.

The 19-year-old Slovenian hockey player Anže Kopitar1 had a tremendous debut in the NHL this month, scoring twice in his first game. Sadly, an AP article referred to him as a “rookie from Sweden” — the first known instance of a major media outlet mixing up Slovenia and Sweden. (The problem: He played in Sweden, but is a Slovene.)

The official NHL site corrected the mistake, but many other news sources (including Sports Illustrated, Forbes, NBC, The Chicago Tribune, Seattle Post Intelligencer, and even his hometown paper The Los Angeles Times) repeated it. You can browse through all 156 of them here.

Another opportunity for Slovenia to get some press, down the drain.

(Thanks Matty!)

  1. Pointless tidbit: Although Americans refer to him as KopiTAR, here in Slovenia, the second syllable is stressed, thus: Ko-PI-tar. [back]

Questions: does this mean you’re going to have to introduce a new category? And: is there any record of a major media outlet confusing Slovakia with Sweden?

    Sweden-Slovenian-Slovakian Mix-Up?

I live in Sweden, and never once heard of the guy until just the other week when his tremendous NHL debute made the media mention the sucessful slovene who used to play in Södertälje. This could be because I’m not that into hockey, but as he was their top scorer I still think I should have heard about him. I usually notice slovenes living here, since I’m half-slovene myself, and there are acctually quite a few, playing soccer, hockey and speedway…

I kind of prefer more obscure mix-ups like this. I’d really love to see something like a Slovenia-Papau New Guinea mix-up. I don’t know about Sweden-Slovakia — that’s way out of my jurisdiction.

Tessie: There does seem to be a quite a healty expat community up there. I’m pretty amazed that so many Slovenes thought to themselves “It’s not nearly cold enough for me here. Time to move!” (Although they probably had other considerations…)

Michael, obviously you haven’t been to Sweden yet. Time to broaden your knowledge, again.

Wow, I heard of this guy before and saw his NHL stats, but what really blew me away was this interview of his. Anze comes off as modest, self-confident, intelligent and speaks very good English! And he kicks ass! Way to go!

Cold, yea, well, that’s more a question of definition (and how hardy you are :)) -also, it’s a long country… First snow fell in the north over a month ago, but here it’s still 15 degrees :) In Slovenia on the other hand you have temperatures below zero in July..well, that’s in places like Kredarica, but still - it stoped me from going to Triglav this summer :( still love Slovenia though…
The slovenia-slovakia thing is common here too, creating conusion, but too many know too litte about both countries to care…
Don’t know of any such thing as a sweden-slovakia mix-up, but among foreigners I think there is a Sweden-Switzerland one…

My father had the opportunity to choose between going to Sweden or going to Australia back int he early 60´s….and he chose….Sweden.
I think he did it because it is closer to home :)

So when I decide to emigrate to Sweden in the (not so) near future, I’ll find many of you there? Great! :-)

Well I think the number is about 4000-5000 slovenians here. But, I don´t think second and third generations are counted into this number.

I know of someone who had lots of problems because of the confusion between Slovenia and Sierra Leone.
My friend assumed the reason was due to SLO being international abbreviation for Sierra Leone. Somehow this got into his US immigration file and he had constant problems when entering US, what he did frequently for business reasons. Once an officer made a mistake and typed in the reference SLO, and ever since he was kept for hours at the US border to clarify the Slovene passport and visa issues, and although in the end they always let him in, they never erased Sierra Leone remark and so it was coming up again and again. In the end, Slovene ministry of exterior needed to intervene.
    :-)

They’ll just never learned, let’s face it. And we always take the shorter part, because we’re quiet and we don’t say anything. shame …

I read your FAQ. Nice ;) and congrats for moving into our beautiful country. ;)

A sound mix-up of countries is always refreshing! Sweden, Switzerland, Swaziland, and now - lo and behold - Slovenia!
