Three Final Countdowns

The original “Final Countdown” by Europe.

The absolute worst cover version ever.

Slovenian Industrial band Laibach’s version of The Final Countdown

By the way, The Final Countdown is 20 years old this year. Twenty. If you remember seeing the original, like I do, you’re probably wondering how time has passed you by so quickly. Like I am. And whether your life is now in the final-countdown phase, which it probably is.

Have a nice weekend!

you can avoid it by using an alternative source of the video.

    Use this…

Thanks to both of you! My obsessive-compulsive side just couldn’t handle having the third video missing from the page.

This Post fits totally our situation.
I don’t won’t to hurt any slovenian feelings but I don’t like the version of Laibach any better than the second one.

This song will always remind me of the Fall of the Berlin Wall - there must be a reason this is so, but I don’t remember it right now.
One does get to like Laibach, though. I “discovered” their music only last year and I am happy I did.

Love Laibachs version, tired of Europes.
Always been annoyed though at the lines…we are heading for Venus….with so many lightyrs to go….LĂghtyrs to Venus?
Gospod Joey needs an astronomylesson ;)

The second has one good side. It’s shorter! It could be even more!

It’s 20 years since 1986. That means we partied like it was 1999!

    Hurra for music!

The Laibach version of anything is better than the original.

Great song. Funny how the guitarist is the odd one out in the video. Pretty manly looking compared to the rest of the band who wear more make-up than their mothers.

The Final Countdown; ahhh, the memories… The person who introduced me to Europe is now a member of parliament for the extreme right fascist party in this country (but thanks anyway, erm, dude :-P). I dated my first nymphomaniac girlfriend (something I seem to do every ten years, how odd. A ten year itch of sorts?) and through the wonders of extensive hair care, I got mistaken a lot for Joey Tempest (though I never looked nearly as feminine as he did, and I have pictures of the both of us together to prove it :-p) and got my first taste of doing autograph sessions for the girls in my high school (it was a girl’s school that went co- ed the year before , so you can figure out the male/female ratio at the time). Yeah, those were the days… However, I profess to still liking Europe. Their last album was much heavier, and the one preceding The Final Countdown, Wings Of Tomorrow, is still the best they ever released. And for those who secretly harbour a fetish for TFC : there will be a CD/DVD package released commemorating the 20 year anniversary of said album.
In those 20 years, I’ve grown to like other things, like Laibach. I don’t know if any songs they cover is better than the original, but it’s largely true. Funny thing, just yesterday I did my bar tending ex a great favour by putting their version of Opus’ ‘Life is Life’ on the bar’s PC. As for counting down, ever since being born, we’re doing nothing but that. But we also did party like it was 1999. Several times, I might add. And that’s final ;-)

@ARF: you mean the current mayor of Trbovlje? :)

@alcessa: Fall of Berlin wall? Maybe because Europe are not unlike Scorpions and their “wind of change”? :D

by pengovsky on September 1, 2006 at 4:29 pm

  • 16

@Pengovsky - you’re right of course. Must have mixed them up or something. Maybe to repress the fact that in 1986, when The Final Countdown was all around, I had a crush on a classmate who didn’t want to know anything about it - who knows. I don’t remember.

Wait, what? Wasn’t Laibach’s version much slower, heavier, much more industrial and less cheesy-techno-ish? I don’t really like this version all that much…

    Twenty?? Gosh …
Ten minutes ago I was going through a meter of old records (not CDs, records.) looking at Frankie goes to Hollywood, Jean-Michel Jarre, Spliff, Bucks Fizz, Mike Oldfied. I wouldn’t throw out the Frankie goes to Hollywoods, but I want to get rid of history. Does anybody know a good place to sell all that stuff?

There’s a slightly different permutation of Laibach’s version on their MySpace page.

Yes, Laibach are on MySpace. The end of the world is nigh, clearly.

Well, I might not be objective due to my background (Slovenian + old Yugoslav) but to me Laibach is the best! I remember how we were all crazy about them in those old times. As for Final Countdown I think we are closing to zero!!!

I like the Laibach version best, the real bad one, damn he sings so badly I want to hurt him for it! NO ONE who sings that badly should be allowed on a stage!
I refuse to have anything to do with Myspace! I don’t care if Laibach are there!

Novala - Come to Slovenia and go to the second hand CD shop. You can trade them in or sell them for some change.

Although, they too are getting picky. I tried to sell the collected hits of kelly family and they looked at me like I had small pox.

by cookie on September 2, 2006 at 9:10 pm

  • 23

@Kelly Family: This, my dear Cookie, I do understand. :-)

I will try to sell the records here to a 2nd hand store.

@Pengovsky : Nope, he’s Belgian - well purebred (now where have I heard that term before? :-P) Flemish if you hear his and his party’s fascist rhetoric.
@Novala : You’re NOT going to get rid of your J.M. Jarre records, are you? I mean, come on! Zoolook is still the strangest trip I’ve been on while entirely sober and you can’t deny Oxygene IV is a synth classic! ;-)
@Katja : Are you sure that’s a he? I couldn’t determine the gender by listening and I’m not sure I really want to ;-). By the way, I take it I won’t have to direct you to my Myspace page either, right? :-P

by ARF on September 3, 2006 at 12:37 am

  • 25

ARF: You want them? I liked Zoolook, but I’ld rather digitalize the stuff and throw the record away. If you want to have the records, just let me know.
