Bill Maher discusses evolution, the U.S. and Slovenia. Click play.
Bill Maher once hosted a popular talk show in the U.S. called Politically Incorrect, which was shut down after some controversial comments, and then reborn as Real Time with Bill Maher.
The show recently tackled the subject of evolution and, specifically, research showing that support for evolution in the United States is relatively low and continues to erode. That sad story is here. The same research also showed that, in a survey of 34 countries, only Turkey has less believers in evolution. Slovenia ranked 16th, just ahead of Finland and right behind Ireland. The complete list of rankings is here.
One thing I find interesting (if that’s the right word) in the above clip is that although Maher is criticizing the United States, he actually seems to be angry because it’s behind such obviously shitty countries as “Bulgaria” and “Slovenia.” It’s a bit of a testament to the really hardcore patriotism that exists in the U.S., I think.
(Big thanks to Abaris!)

That’s shocking! It makes me sad that so many people in the so called civilized countries still believe in all sorts of mambo jambos.
It only shows again that the most developed:) country in the world implements its culture to the others.
GOD HELP US!
Nu, nu! I can’t say I believe in evolution for sure, since it hasn’t been really prooved…On the other hand I really don’t believe in creation, cause that is complete bullshit. A science professor we had at high school was telling us, that we are actually the product, or leftovers of a galactic orgy, that happened around 800K years ago. He was crazy, but…who knows?
I myself am a believer in the Flying Spaghetti Monster
Interesting. I read an interview with him in the Onion’s A.V. Club just a few days ago in which I thought, but couldn’t be sure, that I detected that sort of bigoted attitude toward “such obviously shitty countries”. Thanks for posting this to confirm it.
Maher asks, “Are you ever embarrassed by [America]?” and while the answer is “yes, often”, now it’s “yes, by you and your blinkered running-down of more-enlightened places that must obviously be shitty because they’re not America, which by the way embarrasses you.” World Tae Kwon Do Federation?
Everyone knows that the Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and the Rest of Fish is 42.
Slovenia has become popular to name as an example of “obviously shitty countries” lately. Remember AliG’s “Back to Slovenia!”? It’s modern to know it exists?
“Slovenia, which’s been a country since about thursday” That’s really funny (it is!), but I wonder what has being a country (only if only since thursday)have to do with believing in evolution?
Anyone ever come up with the idea that -in essence- creationism and evolution are not mututally exclusive?
It is amusing that a country stereotyped as being the most hardcore catholic state outside the Vatican (Poland) is statistically less retarded than the average US mind who’s household watches TV 8.5 hours a day.
JS, the question in the poll was “Did human beings develop from earlier species”! It didn’t say anything about evolution or creationism.
Americans believe that the world was created 6000 years ago and that we lived together with dinosaurs as it says in the Bible.
The Vatican in general accepts the theory of evolution, although with some growing reservations since Benedict XVI. took over.
Luka, of course that joke’s funny. I mean, everybody knows that to be accepted as a *real* country, we’d have to have existed at least since last saturday, like the USA for instance.
As it is, we’ll have to do with playing the role of Ruritania for American audiences for a while. (And I’m not sure if getting constantly mixed up with Slovakia at that is a good thing or not - check the comments under this video on youtube… Sigh…)
Guys, let’s just be thankful that we are not ripped by Borat like Kazakhstan.
mAT: Evolution has for all intents and purposes been proven, even if it hasn’t been directly observed. Scientific American has a great overview here.
Ka: I remember. It’s here if anyone else hasn’t seen it.
“Slovenia, which’s been a country since about thursday
has been used by Maher before while still hosting PI. At that time it was in connection with the math scores!! This was I believe in ‘93.
On your deal with all the pretty changing pictures of Slovenia I noticed you have a lovely little herd of Lippezaners! mares and foals, how totally LOVELY! Way to promote one of Slovenia’s wonderful contributions to the world!
Tell those Alien Melon folks ‘Good Job’!
Re. the USA. This evolution thing, as far as belief in it goes, is just another perfect example of what happens when you don’t successfully seperate Church and Science.
Plus, if you’re a cretin, you have a better chance of improving your lot and that of your spawn by getting that goog ol’ time religion and thumbing (well, if you are blessed with two opposable thumbs) at Darwin, Lucifer’s buddy.
..and what’s with Croatia? From the list that you linked to, it’s # 26 of 34. Must be the coastline; we’re still so close to our watery roots, that we’ve put evolving on a “We’ll check it out later” list.
Emeritus:
Appearing as a guest on Arsenio Hall, referring to some study where Slovenia ranked number one in education, Maher said, “Slovenia, a country for only a week, kicked our butts!”
I’m not sure it was Maher again, but I remember another joke told by a comedian around this time: “Is it really a surprise that Yugoslavia broke apart? This is the country that brought us the Yugo.”
Creationists and others from the religious right trying to ram their dogma down others’ throats–including my daughter’s, but she put up a spirited defense of Darwin–were one of the reasons I found life in the USA intolerable. More here if anyone is interested:

Living with dinosaurs is mentioned in the bible?
“And lo Jesus and the disciples walked to Nazareth. But the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus… with a splinter in his paw. And O the disciples did run a shriekin’: ‘What a big fucking lizard, Lord!’ But Jesus was unafraid and he took the splinter from the brontosaurus’s paw and the big lizard became his friend.
“And Jesus sent him to Scotland where he lived in a loch for O so many years inviting thousands of American tourists to bring their fat fucking families and their fat dollar bills.
“And oh Scotland did praise the Lord. Thank you Lord, thank you Lord. Thank you Lord.”
Well, I thought that this passage was made up by Bill Hicks
But most shocking news is that we rank only 16th. I would like to think that after 50 years of secularisation we could manage at least spot in top ten.
Come on. We didnt evolve. We dont even exist. Its all a dream! Its all a dream!
I think that americans have a problem with following thinking. For a good half of previous century they were much more advanced than other european countries and they still believe that the rest of the world is 100 years behind the wooden spoon. so, when they encounter the proof that other “shitty” counties may be better off, they are baffled. Like that comentary one year ago on mortality rate of infants, which is for example in the U.S. higher than in Slovenia, they are outraged. (Nicolas D. Kristof in the New York Times)
I’m not sure it was Maher again, but I remember another joke told by a comedian around this time: “Is it really a surprise that Yugoslavia broke apart? This is the country that brought us the Yugo.
Could it be Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear?
So yeah…..STUPID Americans don’t know their own country well and have no right to talk about countries they have no clue about.
I am SLOVENE and Slovenia is actually a much nicer place to live then anywhere in the US. And I know, I lived in the States for 3 years. And had to go back because I couldnt stand how retarded and ignorant people are there.
Not to mention missing the beautiful nature.
SO….I dare all you fucking americans to try and say anything else about it !
Fix your own damn country first before saying shit about others.
Nejc:
I’m sorry you had a terrible time in American. You seem like such a wonderful person.
I dare you to prove that you lived in the States for three years.
This comment of “Slovenia being a country since Thursday” is INSULTING towards Slovenia and Slovenians. Americans - you won’t win many friends around the world by making fun of other countries. Such comments only serve to weaken the American image in the world.
