The final brutal minutes of Maribor v. Villarreal. (click to play)
I’m not much of a soccer fan, but I nevertheless did my patriotic duty and went to the recent game between 7-time Slovenian champion NK Maribor and Villarreal CF. It was both teams’ final match in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2006, so the heat was on — it was on the streets. This was never more apparent than in the final ten minutes, when events on the field stopped resembling soccer and started looking like Wrestlemania 6.
Up in the stands I missed a lot of the fouls. So did a lot of people around me. That didn’t stop us from shouting and whistling at the referee whenever one of our beloved purple gladiators fell down or got in a scuffle. But as soon as the roar died down, my neighbors would turn to me and ask: “Kaj je blo?” (What happened?)
So, I actually missed a lot of what you can see in the video. I did see this ridiculous Three-Stooges-inspired nose grab by Villarreal’s only-goal-scorer Nihat “Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk” Kahveci.
I also got to hear the word MA-RI-BOR! well over a thousand times, which is (of course) what makes the live experience so thrilling. When all was said and done, Villarreal lost a whopping three players to red cards — including Diego Forlan, who slapped a Maribor player three times in less than sixty seconds. (The last time while standing directly next to the referree — clearly not a symptom of advanced intelligence.) Maribor won on aggregate 3:2.
In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen: MARIBOR ŠAMPION! Also: MARIBOR!! And: MARIBOR!! And, to summarize my position on this issue: MARIBOR!!!!
P.S. MARIBOR ŠAMPION!!!

Purple gladiators - a common prank among friends?!?!
Women don’t count as recipients, do we? DO WE?!?!?
Yes, it was an exceptional performance to get rid of last season’s Champions League semi-finalists. Hope you are going to repeat it in Maribor-Partizan Belgrade: The Reckoning 2 on 24/8. Oh and then draw Newcastle United in the next round so I can have a good excuse to come back.
PS Sorry to be a pedant but its Villarreal (with 2 rs)
The influence of Zidane …
plav trg: Thanks, fixed it. I think I’ve been in Slovenia so long that I’ve become naturally suspicious of double consonants.
alcessa: I think it’s more a high school/college thing among drunken men. I never did it or saw it done in my youth. Damn kids today. Back in my time, a Roman Helmet was more than enough.
No need for concern, though, women are exempt.
ps. sorry to be a pedan but it’s football in europe not soccer
Anonymous is right about soccer / football but I think that anyone apologising for being a pedant should at least spell the word “pedant” correctly. Or am I being pedantic?
Thanks Michael, I wasn’t aware that any kind of “happy slapping” with the penis was a part of the blissful high school time.
Anonymous: Wikipedia claims it’s quite normal to say soccer even in Europe (UK etc.).
Tz tz tz, you even dare to write about this after the disgraceful first half against Partizan Belgrade last night
NOV will win again!
I understand football affects men’s minds in most peculiar ways, but, dear almost compatriot, you shoud really throw the picture of Bratislava out from the animated band on top of your page. Or am I being too pendantic, too?
Alcessa, women don’t count as the recipients of the purple gladiator, but only if they had been donkey punched before.
Crni: iiiiiii!!!
I will take that as the sound of gleefully anticipating the next encounter with your SO. All the best, but do not let him do the Dirty Sanchez or Cleveland Steamer. Perhaps a little felching would be in order, however.
Excellent to see football getting a mention here once again.
Was wholly unaware of this match, but glad to see a Slovenian team beating what is undoubtedly a top class European side. One of our country’s best teams couldn’t manage it in the Champions League, and although that’s not saying too much for us, I wouldn’t have thought it possible for Maribor. Well done.
