Survey Says …

location of readers.jpg
Question 1: The location of TGoC readers.

The survey was a great success, with more than 300 people participating. My warmest thanks again to everyone who filled out the questionnaire.

Before I tell you what happened, let me first tell you what didn’t happen: Not a single person clicked on the box saying that they lived in Koroška (Carinthia). In fact, that was the only option in the entire questionnaire that no one touched. It was like the leper of the survey. I was baffled. I asked some friends why this might be the case, but they just unleashed abusive and derisive anti-Carinthia rants — which is what always happens when you ask one Slovene about another region of the country. (Slovenes aren’t nationalists, they’re regionalists.)

Otherwise, half of the people in Slovenia appear to be in lovely Ljubljana, roughly 20% are in Styria, and the rest are evenly spread out across the country. For people living outside of Slovenia, about 70% have some connection to the country (friends/family/visit) and 30% have none.

Many of you (28%) were too high on methamphetamines to remember how you first got here, while others blogs accounted for most referrals. (22%)

Here are the top five results for the most-enjoyed and least-enjoyed categories:

Happy Happy Joy Joy
Most Enjoyed Least Enjoyed
Things you Won’t See in the U.S. (13%) I Pretty Much Enjoy them all (45%)
Slovenia (12%) Great Yugoslav Album Covers (11%)
ex-Yugoslavia (9%) Natalija Verboten (10%)
Eternal Slovenia/Slovakia Mix-up (9%) Sports (6%)
EU (7%) ex-Yugoslavia (5%)

As you can see, ex-Yugoslavia is the only category to make both of the top five. Otherwise, there was quite a bit of variance with no overwhelming consensus. Except, of course, for question number eight. A full 100% of you described Slovenian singing sensation Natalija Verboten as some form of delicious, as demonstrated by this pie graph:

verboten answers.jpg
Question 8: How would you describe Natalija Verboten?

I really don’t get why you are all so obsessed with her. Quite frankly, it’s almost pathological.

As for RSS feeds: About 23% of you are subscribed to one, and 30% aren’t sure what it is. If you’re curious, this page has lots of good info about feeds. Basically, they let you keep track of various pages in one place. Instead of opening up carniola.org, you go to (for example) Bloglines. You can find feeds for pretty much everything, so it’s best to do it if there are a lot of sites you visit regularly.

The suggestions, in the meantime, were wonderful; almost universally very encouraging with a lot of good ideas, plus a lot of complaints about Verboten. It was great.

Big thanks to everyone once again!

Hey, new banner! Or am I just the last person to notice it?

"A full 100% of you described Slovenian singing sensation Natalija Verboten as some form of delicious" Was there another option :-) ?

matej: You didn’t see the “None of the above — don’t play games with me!” option? :)
retailtherapist: I thought it was time to put some springtime images up, even though spring hasn’t yet decided whether to start or not.

I’ve been wondering all along whether the choice of answers concerning Natalija the Forbidden does not disagree with any of the EU-Directives concerning the Democracy of Choice When Having to Answer Questions or something…

@"Slovenes aren’t nationalists, they’re regionalists." We have friends from maribor … now living in germany. When I greeted one of them with "živijo" he looked at me like a horse … you know why.

I am sorry not to have participated in the survey (the Koroška section would still remain blank though). It would be also interesting to do the analysis of answers regarding the gender of the respondents, especially in the Natalija Verboten section ;).

I also noticed the nice new banners. A fresh spring addition.

Question #8, the one concerning Natilija Verboten, was missing one answer option, Delicious mit Schlagge. I believe if this option were offered, you may have had a deterioration from the 100% you’d originally recorded.

Other than that, Michael, a fine studious research project. Something the Tourism Board of Slovenia will soon be requesting to make this summer even more enjoyable for the invading rabble. Congrats.

ps. Thanks for having your underlings so QUICKly fix the commenting problem. Such quick customer service response time; your staff can’t be working out of Bangalore, I assume.

Good stuff. Although hadn’t it been said here before that the majority of readers were not Slovenians? [I dread a switch to Slovene, mhm.] ;)

They’re not underlings so much as overlords. I bow to their skillz.

It would be interesting to see the results of another survey (mit schlag) again in a year. I hope I can remember. This brain of mine ain’t what it used to be.

Michael: hope it doesn’t have anything to do with you being over 30? :)

ooooh shame on me. I am from Carinthia, but in the survey, I carefully wrote, that I come from Maribor, since I’ve lived here for almost 6 years now. Must be due to all that annoying jokes about carinthian women though.
