Slovenian partisans. (source)
Today is a national holiday commemorating Slovenian resistance to fascist occupation. It’s hard to imagine what this country would look like had that fight been lost. I suppose it wouldn’t even be a country at all; just a memory.
The Slovenia Times recently published an article about the little-known Battle of Dražgoše, the first head-on collision between the German army and Slovenes in World War 2. It’s an interesting story that was entirely new to me.
Have a good holiday.

But if you have only a poor evidence in the wikipedia this cannot be really a big thing: Battle of Drazgose Dražgoše and today? Dan upora proti okupatorju
Someone needs to get cracking on those wikipedia articles.
I first heard about the Battle of Dražgoše on my first trip to Slovenia in 2000, when I went to the Loški Muzej in the Castle in Škofja Loka. Among other very interesting exhibits, you will see the remarkable “golden altars” of Dražgoše, which were rescued after the Germans razed the village. Not all the pieces were recovered so there are many gaps in these remarkable 17th c. altars. Boštjan Burger provides a wonderful look at these altars on his virtual tour of the Loški Muzej: www.burger.si/MuzejiInGalerije/LoskiMuzej/VR/SF_LoskiMuzej14.html
Michael: Batle of Dražgoše is not "little-known" among Slovenians. Everyone who has finished primary school knows about it. From the global point of view you may be right. But then again Slovenia is "little-known" as such
Actually, I started that Wikipedia article (Battle of Dražgoše) after reading about it here
matej: You’re definitely right. I was thinking more in the sense of the general history of WW2. I’ve read a lot of books about the war, but you just don’t see it mentioned. Unfortunately. Dejan: Nice work! Definitely a good (and appropriate) deed for the day. This summer, when everyone is gone for the holidays, I’ll probably take some time off from this site and maybe do some edits to wikipedia as well.
Tremendous! Slovenia doesn’t get the deserved credit for the struggle against Fascism !
