QUESTION: What do Slovenia, owls, the 1880s and baseball have in common?
ANSWER: Nothing.
At least, that’s what the answer would be if it weren’t for Dr. Seth Hawkins. As it is, Dr. Hawkins, a retired professor, runs a small museum in St. Paul, Minnesota, featuring exhibits dedicated to all four subjects. What connects them? Absolutely nothing. Hawkins is simply drawn to "obscure" things.
He realized one day that he didn’t know much about Slovenia, so he started collecting stuff related to it. He made 10 trips to the country after 2001, and spent about $30,000 collecting masks, maps, clothing and other items. His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed; he’s now "one of four finalists — and the only non-Slovenian — under consideration to become the Slovenian consul to Minnesota."
