The Peacehiker

matej in cuba.jpg
Matej (center): Roaming the earth like Caine in Kung-Fu. (source)

There is a 21-year-old man out there who left his house one day in July 2004 with nothing but a backpack, a guitar, and $200 and ended up walking over nearly 20 countries and three continents in 18 months. His nom de guerre is the peacehiker and — get ready for a surprise — he’s not from California. In fact, get ready for an even bigger surprise, because he’s a Slovene from the little town of Postojna.

His site has a lot of information about his journey, as does this profile of him by The Hindu newspaper. His large photo album on Flickr is also worth a visit.

Hmmm… i already saw this on one other website. As an avid traveller, i of course read with interest what he said. And i don’t doubt that he experienced a lot… and his stories are fun and interesting to read… but… in India i was running away from those more "spiritual" than indians people… but OK, i just found out that i’m a bit shallow in feelings… so maybe that explains my a bit negative stance to this "citizen of the world". So, probably its just me…  And yes, he also has a blog… http://peacehiker.blogs.com/

Sorry, but I think this guy is full of shit. Peace-hiker, my ass. His journey is as much about peace as catholic church is about peace and understanding. I bet there are quite a few people who’d like to travel the globe nobly "spreading peace" (while being sponsored by other people), rather than working for a living.

    * "…as much as the catholic church is about love and understanding…" I meant. It all amounts to the same thing anyway. :P

I’ve been to his site a couple of times already but I still can’t make up my mind on whether he’s just another "I’m holier than thou, current Jesus incarnation wannabe" parasite or simply a marketing genious who found a perfect niche for himself.I’ve seen worse attempts to travel the world for free that’s for sure.

Well, if one takes a look on Google news, one will see that this guy got a hell of a lot more coverage everywhere else than in Slovenia. If we compare him to Tomaž Humars, who made a lot of noise but achieved nothing, then this guy (in my eyes) is the real thing. Even if all of his dogs may really not be barking :)

why is everyone so negative about him? i kinda like his idea of "believing in one’s dreams". let him do what he does, if it makes him happy and if he makes profit of it…why not? wouldn’t you too?

Offtopic: I’m glad to see that TGoC is fully functional again!

It’s not that hard to be negative actually… When a woman exploits men for financial benefit she’s usually reffered to as gold digger or something along those lines. He’s been doing exactly that throughout his travels… hoping from one country to the next, from one woman to the next and getting money from them. Obviously he’s been giving them something in return and he must be good at it (and that may well be the secret to world peace) ;) but that’s beside the point. He’s promoting himself as peacewalker yet doesn’t really do anything remotely similar to promoting peace or organizing events on a larger scale than an audience of 10 school kids. Bono, Bob Geldoff etc. actually put their money where their mouth is and are trying to make a difference, whatever that is. All "peacewalker" ever did was ask for money and plane tickets. In return for what?He obviously mastered self promotion (and I admire him for that) but doesn’t do anything to support his claims. Reminds me of Martin Strel actually… ;)

i can’t realy comment on this guy, because i couldn’t make it past more than a few sentences each time i tried reading his musings. i just have this revulsion to people of his ilk, who seem to believe that they achieved a higher state of consciousness just by hanging around a few dubious swamis and gurus in india for a few days. and i’m not trying to put down indian/asian spirituality, just the western new-age-y quasi-spiritual parasites. while i whole-heartedly (and very naively, granted) believe in world peace, i don’t think pretending you are what you are not is the right path to get you there. i agree with jernej there - bono or bob geldof do a better job.i’m just sorry his site doesn’t seem to have an archive. i would have loved to read the bs he was bound to have written about japan…

Nice to have you back, Michael! About the guy from Postojna: I think he’s cool. Making a living by travelling around the globe. Great! And who cares of the new-age-spiritual crap anyway. The guy’s 21, FChS, he’ll get over this: but at least he’s got an experience we can all only wish for.

"i kinda like his idea of "believing in one’s dreams". "What dream would that be? How to travel the globe without spending any of your own money, in a true hobo manner? I doubt quasi-spirituality and blatant hedonism will help feed the poor, cure the sick and alliviate racial tensions. John Lennon tryed that at one point. It didn’t work.

What ever kind of fun this young guy is into is fine with me even if it is warmed over 60s govno, what bothers me is the mention of ‘10 heads of state’ going to this ‘magical’ place! including the President of Slovenia! He sounds like a character in ‘Karma Cola’!

His travel thing is indeed amazing, but what else a guy from a village near Postojna can do? Nothing amazing so far. But what’s amazing is his american boy marketing, which he did later. This throws a completely different light on his travels.

I just saw him on E+. He did something what an everage man wouldn’t. Why are you judging him? It is his life. So what if he sounds like a smartass? His probelm, not yours.  Peace and have a nice day.

I read your comments and I see so much envy especially from Slovene posters which should not be that much of a surprise…

To all Janezes and Mickas: he is just better than you are…

    Go and eat yourself.
