Go Back to Slovenia!

fit women.jpg
A scene from Ali G Indahouse. Click to watch.

The otherwise forgettable movie Ali G Indahouse (2002) contains a joke about Slovenia, or at least about Slovenian women. It’s only worth noting because you almost never even hear the word "Slovenia" in major movies. If you’ve never seen this movie or heard about it, here’s a quick summary: (To watch the one-minute clip, click on the picture above or click here.)

Basically, Ali G is a wannabe-gangsta and dope who somehow makes it into the British cabinet. In this scene, ministers are talking about what to do about the "refugee problem." Ali G suggests only letting beautiful women in, and rejecting mingas. We then see a stream of pretty ladies walking through customs, until a frumpy girl is stopped and told: "Back to Slovenia!"

It didn’t make much of a ripple here. The magazine Mladina (oddly, in my opinion) doesn’t even mention the joke in its review. And although the first commenter there clamors for a "boycott," most people seem to be sane enough not to get riled up about it. In fact, the first (and best) reply is: "Obviously Ali G has never been to Slovenia. :)"

Slovenia only gets beaten by the Czech Republic IMO.

It’s good that we get mentioned at least somewhere… and that we are not mistaken with slovaks  ;)And I have to agree with Michael… Ali G has obviously never been to Slovenia…

i read the comments page, and the guy calling for a boycott manages to call himself “something of a movie afficionado” and at the same time accuse A clockwork orange of being a bad movie, because there’s “too many genres mixed together in it”. he calls 2001: a space oddysey an adventure flick (?) with poor visuals(???). WTF? (this guy’s not to be taken seriously, is my point…)

Don’t you see?  You have to look it from an another perspective. The "minga" one is only an exception from a group of Slovenian women that go through customs. :) Ali G at his best:http://www.youtube.com/w/Ali-G-interview-the-Beckhams?v=L4bZTPRiWgY&search=ali%20g

I’ve seen the movie (thank you P2P network :)) And I think the joke was quite funny. Ali G obivously hasn’t been here, but he wouldn’t fare well with his "I bangs me bitch" attidude anyways ;) But it’s a funny joke. But then again… Isn’t it nice to know that we have all these beautiful women just to ourselves. Well, there is the occasional foreigner who snatches one of our beauties (riiiiight, Michael M.?), but our women pick only the best anyway :)))Then again Slovenia is not all that uncommon as an object of a practical joke. Take the Legend of Zorro featuring Antonio Banderas and Catherine (yummy!) Zeta Jones. At one point Zorro and the bad guy are talking about smoking a pipe:Bad Guy: "…but do you know to smoke a pipe the way they do it in Slovenia?" Zorro: "Of course. I’ve been there. Great city"BG: "Country"Z: "Whatever" Then there’s the famous "Lipizzaner scandal" in Crimson Tide feat. Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, but I’m sure y’all know about that

I found out that the film was funny. As for Slovenian women, well I still refer Slovenia as "the land of the walking godess" so let’s say that they are not so bad.And let’s face it, Ali G wouldn’t add this sentence if he ever had the luck to have a Stajerska in his bed :)

I’ve been looking for that infamous Crimson Tide scene for a while, and will post it here when I can. (If anyone has it please mail it to me)However, I’ve never heard of that Zorro bit. Are you sure you weren’t coked up and imagined the whole thing? (It’s nothing to be ashamed of — it happens to me all the time.) Still, Google and IMDb don’t turn up anything.

@Michael M.: Positive. Will provide a clip as soon as I can. And the dialogue is not about smoking a pipe, but playing polo

  • 9

Obviously not!!And please, don’t  mention  Crimson Tide, it still hurts!

by Luka on February 10, 2006 at 11:15 am

  • 10

Michael:there are acually two scenes in Crimson Tide about this and not just one. In the middle of the movie, D. Washington and G. Hackman argue about the thing (with Hackman saying Lipizzaner are from Portugal and Washington they are from Spain). Then, at the end of the film (I even think it’s the last scene) Hackman admits they are Spanish. (That’s where patient Slovenes-who thought the truth would be victoriuos at the end- go crazy and start burning American flags.)

by Luka on February 10, 2006 at 11:34 am

  • 11

The wikipedia article mentions that the Lipizzaner are "native to Slovenia" but "founded on Spanish horses." Wouldn’t that make Hackman right?

by Michael M. on February 10, 2006 at 11:53 am

  • 12

@Michael M.: To an extent, yes… However, the Lipizzaner breed is native to Lipica. AFAIK it is a "modified" version of the spanish horse, and recognized as a different breed. Once again we stumble across Slovenes being devotedly jealous of all things Slovenian :)

Ever since I have realised that using words like Slovenians, Slovenian, Slovenia, me, my Slovenian friends etc. in the near proximity of words like wine, beer, dizzy, drink, fluid, mouth, swallow… makes people within the hearing distance grin widely and nod as if recognizing something (at least in Germany), I have been waiting for a film with  a bottle holding Slovenian meaning to represent a prototype… As long as no such film exists, however, I am happy to believe that I know some very weird, biased people.

@melis: Something in that fashion indeed exists - albeit in the porno idustry. Namely a Slovene porn star Andreja Jelen, a.k.a. Cassandra (renowned for having one of the biggest pair of natural boobs in the industry)  was a guest on "In the bed with Danni".I sent the link to Michael M., because it’s explicit content and he may decide not to publish it. P.S.: this post may be a bit off topic, but having read words "mouth" and "swallow" images just started rolling in my mind. I know, I’m sick :)

The breed of the horses is actually Andalusian (which are usually reffered to as "Arabic" and not "Spanish" horses). However, both Washington and Hackman are wrong. It may be doubtful to call Lipizzaner "Slovenian" horses (since "Slovenia" ‘ s existed for less than 80 years, while the Lipizzaners are 500 years old). I’d axcept if they’d fought whether they’re Italian or Austrian, but to place them somewhere between Portugal and Spain. Please??!! I wonder then why are they called Lipizza- ners?Pengovsky: "Something in that fashion indeed exists - albeit in the porno idustry. Namely a Slovene porn star Andreja Jelen, a.k.a. Argh! The pain!….. The suffering!…. They won’t even let us have a pornstar!Michael, HELP!!!!! a jpg file is on it’s way :))Good work, Luka! you get the credit.

And, BTW, I don’t find it strange at all that Mladina didn’t mention the joke in the review. It was written by Marcel Å tefanÄ?iÄ?: and he’s too snob to show interest in "such a banality". Necertheless, I have to agree with his review this time. I can’t watch Ali G for more than five minutes. I don’t say he isn’t funny, but he’s just too demential for my tase. And boring, to be onest. The worst British humour can offer. Besides Austin Powers, of course (is he actually British, BTW?).

"Austin Powers" (character) is from the U.K.; the actor, Mike Meyers (sp?), is from Canada.

I meant the movie. Is it actually a British production or is it again American?

by Luka on February 10, 2006 at 4:50 pm

  • 23

Nony Mous? haven’t i seen you over at c&l? how’d you find your way here? btw, speaking of slovenia and hollywood… from what i gather, the country krakohzia (sic.) in the terminal
was originaly meant to be slovenia. luckily, this caused a buzz in the
american slovene community loud enough to get to spielberg’s ears, and
they changed it. the interesting part of the story is, after this had
been achieved, and the bullet had been dodged
    on what would probably be
yet another devastating blow in the whole
"slovenia? isn’t that one of those ueber poor dismal ex-communist
countries where cities are grey, people are ugly and nobody speaks proper english"
attitude, there have actually been complaints about it. there has
actually been a few wiseasses (here in slovenia…) who thought that with this, an excellent
oportunity for slovenia to appear in a spielberg movie had been
    missed… ach…

From some of the comments here I would assume this is a men´s club rather than an interesting site for everyone interested in Slovenia to read. Because of the lack of respect of women in general which I see here (also supporting the beauty myth) I certainly hope that Slovenia would develop into a country where the spirit of gender equality and equal respect rules (more than anywhere else in the world)… That I would be proud of!
