Thoughts on Life and Living

all souls day.jpg
Red candles light up Slovenian cemetaries on November 1st.

Today is All Soul’s Day, or as Slovenes commonly call it (thanks to the communists) dan mrtvih, or "day of the dead." (Officially it’s actually Dan spomina na mrtve, or "Day to Remember the Dead.") Some people don’t care for it, and others spend it gorging on discount candy in America, but it’s still enormously popular here.

I’ve
always liked it, actually. I suppose there’s something about cemetaries
lighting up that’s very life-affirming. Or maybe it just looks neat-o.
Either way, it’s one of my favorite holidays.

And in keeping with
the circle of life: Yesterday, my wife gave birth to a healthy son. Let
it never be said that I’m not doing my part in fighting Slovenia’s existential crisis.
He was born shortly after midnight, after a very quick and very painful
delivery. Despite having a secondary role in the whole thing, I’m still
quite exhausted, and bracing myself for the long sleepless nights
ahead. But inside I’m positively glowing. Radiating, in fact.

If there are some interruptions in service ahead, you’ll know the reason!

Congrats daddy-o! And my regards to the mysterious Mrs. Manske. The
best time to go to the cemetery on Nov 1st is late in the evening, when
it is dark and quiet and you can see the glow of all the candles. No
traffic then either, which is great, since that is the biggest pain in
a butt about this holiday. As for me, you are correct. I will be stuffing the candy - in my belly!

Well, congratulations to you! My advice: if you dont have one, get an electric hair dryer. Nothing like a little warm air on the belly to calm a crying creature. Putting them on top of the washer also works nicely.

Speaking of Goldmember, the little one is jaundiced, so his triumphant homecoming has been delayed for a bit. It was actually expected, since our first child had it.I’m already looking forward to my fatherhood leave, although I’ll probably be taking it in mid-November. We’ll see. Thanks to everyone for the well-wishes!

Many thanks again, everyone. The daughter is taking it pretty well so far. We used the tried-and-tested "look at the new toy your brother got you!" technique, which works miracles. We’ll see how it goes when he gets home.Heck, I like that "sweet Halloween treat" comment. I might have to steal it. :)
