The Passion of the CimerotiÄ?

Cime_kri
Sebastjan CimerotiÄ? bleeding from an open wrist.

It was a gruesome 25th minute at the Slovenia-Belarus match in Celje last Wednesday. A Belorussian defender accidentally stomped on the left hand of Slovenia’s great (probably greatest) player: Sebastjan CimerotiÄ?. He was rushed to the hospital and operated on through the night — and will probably be out for the next three weeks.

Slovenia tied Belarus 1-1.

As always, Mr. Budja has tons of great pictures from the match.

(Thanks Dejan!)

    omg … that’s a disturbing image.
Michael, you should put a warning/disclaimer first before someone sees it.

I considered putting a blinking disclaimer above it, but I think it would have the opposite effect: Even more people would be tempted to look at it. Also, it is gruesome, but far less so than modern or older works depicting the death of Christ. (And they don’t put warnings outside churches.)

The big question I have is how to spell CimerotiÄ?: Is it CimirotiÄ? or CimerotiÄ?? The official football association of Slovenia (NZS) spells it the first way, but I regularly see it (on RTV, for example) the other way. And when fans shout his name, they say “Cime! Cime!” Does anyone know? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

Excellent question! Sebastjan wears CimirotiÄ? on his own shirt (or at least he did in the 2002 World Cup). I remember the puzzlement of the huge crowd of fellow Slovenians watching the game on a big screen in Ljubljana when they noticed his name spelt as such though. Very interesting stuff…

PS: We were robbed then (against Spain) by the refs, too!

    |=|=|: I remember that game and agree that Slovenia got shafted. If I remember right, it was CimirotiÄ? then who got a card for getting knocked down in the penalty box. (The ref thought he was faking it)

The whole World Cup experience was a heartbreaker.

God, I miss the NHL. Guy gets his face gouged, teeth loosened, hand butchered. He leaves for one shift, gets patched up and/or stitiched, comes back, dispenses appropriate punishment to the offending player. Instead, we’re forced to watch pansies play golf, baseball, football (soccer). Hopefully, the players’ strike will be over later this year. For now, pass out the mercurochrome and tissues.
