U2’s Not Quite Exactly 100% European Tour

U2_tickets

Top: A ticket to the U2 concert in Vienna this summer. (€60)
Bottom: My ticket from a U2 concert in Atlanta 13 years ago. (€22)

Thanks to my connections with the local mafia, I managed to get U2 tickets for the Vertigo tour this summer in Vienna. On July 2nd, I’ll be in the beautiful (and beautifully named) Ernst Happel Stadium shouting "Freeeebird!" together with 50.000 of my closest friends.

The last time I saw U2 was thirteen years ago. I know because I recently rummaged through some old junk and found my ticket stub from back then. (See picture above) Imagine how I felt when I realized how much time had passed between the two concerts. (Hint)

Luckily, Vienna is only a three-hour tour from here if everything goes well. Some people (you know the kind) insist that they can make the journey in just 15 minutes. (Even less if there’s no traffic.)

Either way, going to Austria for concerts is a pretty common thing here. Some big names (Anastacia, Rammstein, REM) have stopped in Ljubljana recently, but U2 won’t be one of them. In fact, their tour of Europe avoids every post-communist country except Poland. (Not even Bono could forget about Poland.)

To help illustrate this divide, here’s a table showing the European cities U2 will be playing in:

European Cities on the U2 Vertigo Tour 2005
Western Europe Eastern Europe
Brussels Katowice
Gelsenkirchen
Manchester (x2)
London (x2)
Glasgow
Dublin (x2)
Cardiff
Vienna
Berlin
Paris (x2)
Amsterdam (x3)
Zurich
Milan (x2)
Rome
Oslo
Gothenburg
Copenhagen
Munich
Nice
Barcelona
San Sebastian
Madrid
Lisbon

For those of you counting, that’s 30 shows in western Europe and one in the east, although I’m sure many people would strongly object to Poland being considered "eastern" instead of "central." So, by that line of reasoning, you could argue that U2’s European tour will have 31 shows — not one of them in eastern Europe.

Either way, I’m looking forward to it — so long as I can resist the urge to sell my tickets on ebay and make a tidy profit…

You paid for a ticket? Why didn’t you get a press ticket?

ah, ja - äh, three hours? Are you going to walk??
Watch out though, when you are running: The section control in the Wechsel-Gebiet is active now.

Isnt it ironic that a bunch of guys I
know are going to Slovenia this summer
because of the music scene. Laibach
played at Lee’s Palace a while ago and
many people came as well as went over to
    the US concerts.

My suggestion would be to sell the tickets and buy some Demolition Group CDs….(or something of that standard)

Oh, you know, Bono & Co. are real concerned about the world and stuff. They can only afford to visit the richest countries where they can charge 60 euros a pop. That and Superbowl. Never mind that their fans in the poorer countries don’t get to see them (unless they are blowing themselves up on TV - Sarajevo). It’s OK, because it’s all for a good cause, really. And U2 are so… concerned, you know. So. Fucking. Concerned. They hurt with the world. Pain.

It’s the same shite with Rage Against the Machine. They were sooo concerned with misery and communism and Che Guevara and so on…the singer quit the band cause he couldn’t reach the social goals he has set himself? Uh? C’mon what the hell do you expect? Do you think that all these ass-holes give a shit about it? It’s just an ad for their music, wellcome to the real world!

I wanted to go to their concert as well. Was too slow, the tickets online were gone by the time i got around to it. And yes, you say everything to sell your albums well. Let’s say that Bono does as much as he can, shall we? And enjoy their music…me, myself not in live version…blah.

“I don’t know why, but we always had this belief that there was something sacred about our music, that it was almost holy.”

-Bono, pompous asshole and lead singer of U2

I’ll tell ya, I was browsing through e-bay a few hours after tickets went on sale, and was amazed at some of the prices. One pair of tickets for the New York show had broken the $1000 mark. If anyone wants to offer me four figures for my tickets, it’s a done deal…

I knew you had connections with the local mafia! Just look how they detailed the place in those charts. IT’S THEIR PLANS TO TAKE OVER THE STADIUM! OR SOMETHING!
    My God!

(The reader may note, that this man cannot read Slovenian too well.)

Yeah like when’s the last time U2 played Sarajevo? Maybe they only wnet because it was fashionable then.

They didn’t even go to Sarajevo, they played in Italy and the concert was broadcasted to Bosnia. Wow, big time heroes. I would go see them coz Franz Ferdinand are playing the first part in Lisbon, but tickets disappeared in a matter of hours!

Speaking of concerts in Sarajevo, I and a couple thousand of my neighbors got comeplely taken in by a “Gypsy Kings” concert back in 1999 at Zetra. Turns out, if you looked at the very fine small print, you would have seen that the adverts said “family of” the Gypsy Kings. A very not nice thing to do.

Yeah same in San Jose, CA… Tickets sold out in 10 minutes, they set up for an additional show for the next day at the same time, tickets sold out for this second show in 15 minutes, too… And reached $1,000 on ebay.

    Lep pozdrav

Excuse me Katja, but U2 DID play in Sarajevo.I WAS THERE !!! It was FANTASTIC…Bono lost his voice though, and Edge had to sing Sunday Bloody Sunday himself! But I agree that it is a shame that they are not playing more countries in Eastern Europe, why no gigs in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Solvenia, Croatia?Perhaps next year - you never know…Philip
