Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) dreams of Jeannie. I mean, satan.
Mister Aitch (alias Mr. H) of the legendary art blog Giornale Nuovo recently held a third CD giveaway. That’s where he gives away music CDs he no longer listens to or likes. The rule is first-come, first-served, so while I missed out the last time and got squat, I was early this time and got a lot. Specifically: this. It’s Anne-Sophie Mutter playing (among other things) Tartini’s famous Devil’s Trill sonata. (<– Click for midi file)
You might not know it, but Tartini was born in Slovenia, in the beautiful seaside town of Piran. Since he was an Italian, you won’t find his name on any list of famous Slovenes, but the center square of Piran (Tartinijev trg) still carries his name. Since I didn’t have any Tartini in my collection, I expressed my interest in it. A short while later, Mr. H. e-mailed me to ask for my home address, which I unsuspectingly gave to him. When a small package arrived from Sweden, I was sure it was my CD. But when I opened it, I found this instead:

In retrospect, it’s all so obvious: the alias (Mr. H = Mr. Hax0r?), the elaborate giveaway as a means of collecting addressess, his interest in Belgian art. It all points to a criminal mastermind unheard of outside of the troubled mind of Ian Fleming.
Jokes aside: the CD arrived, it is wonderful, and his selfless act of goodwill has inspired me to make some changes around here, in the shape of a new weekly feature. Details soon.
(P.S. Here’s the ransom note generator I used. It only works in IE, unfortunately.)

Works in firefox too.
Yup. Confirmed.
Thsi CD-Giveaway sounds like a good idea. Well, at least for the person who gets the free CD and the one that wants to get rid of unwanted media.
I’m looking forward to hearing what your new weekly feature will be like.
Hmmm. For some reason it doesn’t work with my Firefox at all… Odd.
I’m glad the CD made it to you in one piece, and safely bypassed Slovakia. As I already have a leather armchair & a persian cat, an evil plan for world domination would indeed be the logical next step…
I willingly apply as a henchman
Mike, you made me put a hold on two Tartini CDs at the local library.
Better late than never, to actually hear the music I learned about in school, ha ha.
Scanning through this blog - whenever I find the time, I’ve noticed a lot of Belgian references. Belgian beers (yup, I can confirm : they ARE the best; I’m so lucky to be born here… I suppose), now Belgian art… Wasn’t this a blog about Slovenija? Not that I’m complaining, being born in the former and hoping to migrate to the latter, just as soon as I develop an invaluable skill which no Slovene possesses, so I could make a living there or win the lottery; whichever comes first. Check out the flag I will be flying when I’ll have moved at this page : users.pandora.be/ahrayeph/SloveniaFlandriensis.htm (Yes, that is the flag of Flanders Region in there, not the Belgian flag. Please don’t assume any political agenda behind that. It’s just where I hail from; Thank you.)
Being a member of a so- called black metal band, I’m already supposed to be in league with Satan, so I should be familiar with his t(h)rills (not really though, since I’m nowhere near christian and you have to be to believe in Satan). Nevertheless, the MIDI file made me interested in Anne- Sophie Mutter’s take on it, because she’s a great artist in her own right and this is an interesting piece to perform. I just might go and pick it up. Even if it’s not Belgian Art *broad grin*…
Ann-Sophie Mutter sang at my aunt’s wedding.
Ransom Note Generator works fine in Mozilla Firefox. It’s cute and funny!
