Send Some SMS Love to Postojna

Popek

The Postojna Hospital needs your love.

The maternity and gynecological hospital in Postojna (a town famous for its caves) is raising money to buy a new 3D ultrasound machine. They’re calling their charity drive Otroci so popki sveta, which means "Children are the belly buttons of the world." (It only sounds strange in English.)

The machine will be a great help to future parents and to sick women. It also produces kick-ass footage of babies in utero, as you can see for yourself in this short film.

If you’re a Mobitel or Si.mobil user, you can donate 230 SIT (about one euro) to the Postojna Hospital by sending an SMS to the number 1919 with the word "popek" in it. You can also help by speading the word via e-mail, blog, or by standing on a street corner screaming your head off. (Results may vary)

There’s more info about the charity drive here. (In Slovene only)

    Si.mobil, gotcha.

I suppose doing this won’t help fund The Glory of Trump in secret? ;-)

Regarding the “belly buttons of the world”: I guess that maybe the slogan is a pun on the other meaning of the word “popek”, which is “bud”.

And even in English, it sounds a bit less unusual if you replace “belly button” with “navel”. Googling for “navel of the world” produces a fair number of hits.

Heck: I thought about trying that. But I get enough money from the Croatian, Italian, Hungarian and Austrian secret police as it is. (I can’t get into the details, unfortunately. Let’s just say that my site is a hotbed of anti-Slovenia activity. A fifth column, so to speak.)

J: Good point, although I have to admit that “navel of the world” is new to me.

Also, anyone who donates should get an SMS in return from the Posotjna hospital. And, before I forget, the first part was a joke.
