Her style is impetuous. Her defense is impregnable; she’s just ferocious.1

Last month, Slovenian skiing sensation Tina Maze (pronounced MAH-zeh) won a giant slalom race in St. Moritz. What may have been a fluke no longer looked like a fluke this past Saturday, when she won again — this time in Santa Caterina Valfurva, Italy. Now, it’s a streak.
In Slovenia, hopes are high that the streak will continue and that she will terminate her competitors with extreme prejudice at the upcoming Golden Fox 2005 (Zlata lisica) in Maribor, Slovenia. Last year she didn’t do so hot, finishing in 24th place — despite the home-crowd advantage. (Her historical best was in 2002, when she finished right behind the year’s winner, Sonja Nef.)
I was there last year and vividly remember the mood being somber, with the exception of a few pockets of Swedes and Austrians, who were cheering wildly. Of course, they had every reason to cheer wildly. Sweden’s Anja Paerson took home the Golden Fox Trophy and Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister finished second. (There are some pictures from the 2004 competition here.)
If you have nothing planned for next weekend (January 22-23) and are within reach of Maribor, consider coming by to root for Maze. I’ll certainly be in the audience and, if all goes well, cheering wildly.

Damn it! The GS is on the same day as Trump’s wedding to Slovenian “supermodel” Melania Knauss.
Which to attend… which to attend…
The Golden fox of course. You’re not invited to the wedding anyway. :>
I happened to be located at a ski lodge on Vogel that Saturday when Tina won. It was great! The whole lodge cheered wildly as she crossed the finish line. The Croatian skiers asked if Slovenians wil dish out for a round of drinks
However, the expectations get very high very fast back home. A guy stading next to me as we were watching said that 3rd place would have been a failure. Jeez, no wonder the suicide rate is sky-high.
The Golden fox of course. You’re not invited to the wedding anyway. :>
Darn, you are right. Also, I’m too far (Canada) at the moment from Maribor to be at the Golden Fox event. Speaking of the Golden Fox, Tina Maze is way more beautiful than Melania Knauss.
We will be cheering for the Swedish, of course, albeit from a fairly safe (”considerable”) distance.
You mean from the Croatian snowballthrowers?

TINA, everybody now talks just about you and your winnings. There are a few, who knows, that you had to train a lot and live without your loving familiy. You were away from home for 200 days a year, that is just amazing to live and (work) without persons that you love the most. I hope you will keep on winning- you really deserved it
We are with you.
Pozdrav iz Maribora, Mitja
