Zlikavci (hoodlums) is a short, popular, animated T.V. show that that airs on Croatian television Friday nights at 11:15 p.m. The look is very much like South Park, and the style is similarly irreverent. One of the staple characters, seen in the picture above holding a microphone, is a Slovene.
In a recent episode, he announced that he would sing a song about Slovenia and how advanced it is. You can download this very wonderful video clip here. [Windows media file, 1.79 MB] I’ve included the original Croatian lyrics below, with a rough English translation as well. If anyone notices a mistake, let me know and I’ll fix it. In the meantime, I’ve put in some footnotes to help people who aren’t familiar with many of the disputes and rivalries between Slovenia and Croatia.

1. Last September, after a border incident got out of hand, Slovenia withdrew support for Croatia’s EU bid. Since then, Slovenia has reaffirmed its support, but bitter feelings remain.
2. As komentator helpfully notes in the comments, "damn Swedes" is an insult against Bosnians.
3. Piran is a town on Slovenia’s coast. The nearby Bay of Piran has been a flashpoint between the two countries for a while now. The border between the two former Yugoslav republics has yet to be fixed. The mosque comment refers to Slovenia’s long-time reluctance of allowing a mosque to be built in Ljubljana.
4. Slovenes don’t yodel. It’s more of a Swiss/Austrian/Bavarian thing.
5. I’m not sure about this. It might be a reference to Slovenia’s current Prime Minister, Janez JanÅ¡a, whose features are slightly dark. Or it might refer to jokes about Bosnian migrant workers fathering many children in Slovenia.
6. SaÅ¡a LoÅ¡iÄ? is a composer and head of the popular Blue Orchestra. He was born in Sarajevo, but moved to Ljubljana.
7. Branko Ä?uriÄ? is an actor most famous for his role in No Man’s Land. He was born in Sarajevo, but moved to Ljubljana.
8. Anđa Marić, as Dario notes, is a Croatian actress who married and moved to Slovenia.
9. Ivica and Janica KosteliÄ? are both accomplished and successful Croatian skiiers, who regularly (but not always) outperform skiiers from the Alpine country of Slovenia.

I actually found it amusing. I read some forums and some slovenes out there seem really offended by it. I’d really like to know why. Or maybe why I am not offended by it.

The third stanza is not “prokleti Å¡verceri”, but “prokleti Å vedi” - damn Swedes - which was a irreverent expression for a Bosnian. Also note that the accent of a Slovene guy is Bosnian (not Croatian) one. IMO.

I’m certainly not offended either. There’s some truth to most jokes. For instance:
What do you call a Catholic Serb? Croatian. A Croatian muslim? Bosnian.
Of course, Croatians in particular really don’t like to hear this so they sometimes say Slovenians are really Alpine Croatians.
Am I the only one who thinks that South Park is silly cartoon. I tried watching it, just tried. And this is a poor imitation of something that is not that great in the first place.
Offended by the joke? Not really, a lot of it is true, but, the whole thing is pathetic.

About #9; less known fact is that the Kostelić family lived in Celje - Slovenia for quite sime tome. For how many years, I don’t know. Kids speak Slovenian very well, but usualy refuse to speak it in public. I think thant can allso be a couse for foul taste in slovenians mouth.

ok, i’m a Slovene and I’m totally offended by this song, did you know what are Croatian politicions like…they played dumb so many times. Our prime minister signed a deal (arbitraža) with their’s and bothe signatures were on the deal. The boreder between Slo. an Cro. was set, the bad thing was no one in Europe wasn’t contacted to make the deal stick! So that bought them some time, so that they could open their zone on the sea, I’d don’t know how they call it in English. With that they screwed all their neighbours - us and even ITALY.
one more thing, to all the foreigners. Croatia in World War II had it’s own country (nekaj kao ‘nezavisna država hrvatska’) and they signed a pact with the NAZI Germany. Yes! They collaborated with the Germans, of course not all of them, but Croatia was a German allie! And what’s so extremely funny is that they recieved no punishment or how could I call it, noone touched them after the war, cause Josip Broz Tito was born in Croatia, a couple kilometers away from the Slovenian border and he took Croatia under the safe wing of Jugoslavija! Most of them think of them as classy, they’re really nationalistic about their country(even more than us), they think they and their athletes are the best, which you can see in sports, cause Croatian sport fans are really agressive and like to fight, even on the skii slopes in Slovenia they fought with the police, when Janica was skiing!
Now they want to get into EU. Our politicans should be wiser and should not have given them the OK finger so quickly. They should fix the border now, when there is something to negotiate about. Otherwise their politicians just stall and stall and in the end we look bad!
I say give the Croatians a chance to come into the EU if they’re so jelaous of us coming in. Do you think things will get better then stupid Cro’s? Here things are getting worse by the year.. EU sucks!
And another thing. Croatia has got a lot of sea, a little bit of that sea was Slovenian half a century ago. Yugoslavia fucked up that borders, and what was ours fell into their hands. Now we have very little sea and we are fighting with our neighbour who has got plenty of it for a couple of square miles, just to gain access to international sea. Of course the Croatians won’t give in, if they do our port Koper will be even more visited than it is(even carrier JFK was there) and theirs called Rijeka is fucked!
plus there was like a vote for the Koroška region (upper Slovenia and lower Austria-Schwarzenegger was born in Koroška..), where they won and took quite a large part probably around 15% of Slovenia from Yugoslavija back then. There is Celovec, where it used to be the capitol of the first Slovenian country called Karantania(it was about 2x bigger than we are now!), in the 7th century under knez Samo but they also took it. And Italy took Trst/Trieste..
But back to Croatians, here’s the problem of our differences. This links you to a picture of an 1958 official Atlas which was used in schools in Yugoslavija! Look at the border and then look at your new atlas! And now imagine that they want to take even more that they got!

And now there is only 2 mil. of us. In Croatia there is only 1 mil. of people in Zagreb! They make fun of us, of course why not..

They are expensive, better go to Italy, Greece, Bolgaria, Turkey it will maybe(?) cost you a bit more, but you’ ll have a better holiday, trust me. Their sea looks clean, but it’s not. Hi people!First of all I’d like to say that i don’t find south park amusing. I’ve never seen Zlikavci on tv but i guess it is not any different from the original.Regarding the song and the slovenian-croatian relationships i must say the following.I am a croatian who lives in Slovenia and love my homeland Croatia above all. I respect Slovenia and all the people that live here.Even though nobody is perfect, i must say that a majority of croatians are just plain stupid when it comes to friendly relations with their neighbours. They don’t know a thing about Slovenia, whereas its diferent in Slovenia, since it has much more mixed population, hence there is less nationalism. So my advice for people in both countries would be. Get to know each other and try to live in a peaceful manner, like we in the border regions do. All of that shit that the governments and the nationalists do affect mostly us, who live by the border.In the end i have to say that i don’t really see a reason for any hostility but also no solution , since the same problems are here for 15 years and nobody wants to solve them. I guess we should organise some party of mega proportions to get together and finally make peace. Hopefully we can start some mixed marriages! :))))))

Use your head guys! And another thing - where are the women in all this? Oh yea, rolling their eyes and saying ‘huh- men’! I can’t think of too many wars started by women? (and I am a man). In a few years the border posts between Cro and Slo will disapear, just as they will between Italy and Slo. They where will your precious borders be - and even if you could find them, what use will they have. For God’s sake - share a bit more. Croatoia has lovely coastline and lots of lovely sea. But Slovenia - as small as it is - has lovely mountains, lakes, valleys and amazing wine. Each has something to offer the other. Instead of ‘invading and taking’ why not try something a bit revolutionary - sharing and agreeing that each country has something to offer the other, and the rest of the world. So, in summary boys and girls - be a bit more childlike, and a little less childish! Wherever you come from and wherever you live I say, love your country, but do not think it so complete that it can survive without its neighbours. No man is an island!
One more thing: I was once told by a Scottish man that he hated ‘all English people’.
I asked him if he hated me as I am English, and he said he did.
I asked him why he hated all English people (myself included), and he said because of what England had done to Scotland over the past 500 years.
I then asked that, as an Englishman, should I also hate the French for the Norman invasion of 1066, or the Italians for the Roman invasion lead by Brutus?
He had to think about this one.
I then asked him if he hated all English men, would this include those who were born in Berwick, only 100 yards into England, or just those, say, south of Newcastle?
He conceded that those closer to Scotland were ‘less hated’ - being more civilised the closer to Scotland they came from.
Finally, I asked him if being the sone of a Spanish father and Irish mother who settled in England because it was the only place they could agree on, was I actually Englsih at all? This utterly stumped him and he conceded that it was a pretty stupid belief to have.
The point is this. Accept people as individuals. If you hate someone, then only hate them because of what they have done - not who they are, where they come from, what their colour is, who they prefer to sleep with, or which religion they practice. The location of somenes birth, their race, sexuality and religion are things they can do nothing about - and there is no point being offended by them. What makes a man worthy of damnation or the praise of his peers are the things that he can do something about - how he treats other people, his integrity, how he lives his life. These are the things we should be judged on - not on which side of a line visible only on paper we were born!
This really offends me, this is making my people look like something they are not, its croatia making fun of slovenians making them look like people who are up themselfs, which theyre not… i dont like it…. and another thing whats with the yodelling? and also slovenia is part of the balkans so why would he be saying fuck the balkan people, another thing Eu is fucking up slovenia, no one can eat coz food is too expensive people have to go to croatia to buy food, and i juz wanna say that croatians are FAGZ and i dont like them! and in a way slovenia was better when yugoslavia was still looking after everyone, i dont understand all this pride bullshit… fukn hrvati…
