The Heat is On

A pretty bizarre and mean-spirited article has appeared on the e-zine Pestiside.hu, calling Slovenia an "oscure statelet" and the people of Slovenia "vile," "she-goats," and "snaggle-toothed, accordion-playing hillbillies."

The rant is part of their plan to win the category "Best Weblog Focused On A Single Country Or Region" at the European Weblog Awards. So far it seems to be working, which is why The Glory of Carniola urgently needs your vote.

If you didn’t vote yet, go there, find the category "Best Weblog Focused On A Single Country Or Region" and vote for The Glory of Carniola. If not for this site, then at least for the glory of Slovenia.

Vote!

UPDATE: Although I appreciate the votes in the "Best Weblog" category, I’m rooting for Petite Anglaise to win. Please save your votes for the "Best Weblog Focused On A Single Country Or Region" category! The vote ends tomorrow.

Well, that’s a new one. Never really noticed we had any ill tempered attitude towards Hungary/hungarians. Maybe he’s just frustrated that Slovenia has so many pretty women and hungarian chicks turn ugly right when they turn 19 or is it 17? Lots of pretty girls, but no pretty women in Hungary. Weird. :) Anyway, you got my vote.

27.2% Pestiside vs 27.7% of Carniola after my vote. Boy, is it hot.

Haven’t seen a single accordion in Slovenia as yet, though. Am I going to the wrong places? I vouch for the prettiness of women.

Kot si lahko preberete na portalu drepank.blogspot.com imata JanÅ¡a in Sanader že izdelane skupne naÄ?rte za razreÅ¡itev problema Madžarske.

Well, you have my vote. Funny one should use dicriminating words about Slovenians in order to win the competition.
Of Slovenian origin, myself. But my ancestors moved to Bosnia in 1905.

Watch what you say about Slovenia, because our prime minister Janša and Croatian
prime minister Sanader are already having working plans on the table for the
resolution of the Hungarian problem, as you can read on the
    drepank.blogspot.com portal.

Who cares what they write over there.

    (runs over there quickly)

Oh wait… those toads have the nerve to call us Slovenes rather than Slovenians like most of the freakin’ world.

    Bah…they are just jealous.

That article really boiled my blood. And someone should notify la petite Anglaise about it too (she’s actually quite nice [but I voted for this site of course :) ]).

I just voted for this site and if they
want to find accordions they can go to
    Cleveland or somewhere like that

I have no idea why the Hungarians are getting their panties in a wad over their women. I mean really, their country is famous for pornstars. Back in the 90s tons of porn was shot there, cause it was cheap to shoot in nice baroque manors and such. Cicciolina was Hungarian born. I don’t understand why they are so uptight about our Melania then. While their hungarian honeys are busy peddling their snatches, she just simply snatched up a billionaire.

by crni on January 30, 2005 at 4:17 am

Oh, and as for accordions, we should be proud, too! I don’t really like polka music, but if you do something, do it well. And guess what, the Slovenians know polka. Frankie Yankovic, the american “Polka King” from Cleveland was a Slovenian and he always played one song in Slovenian at his shows. And Avseniki might just be the most famous ever european polka & waltz band.

Whatever you opinion of this music in general is, you gotta hand it to these guys - they put their heart and soul into it and they were the best there ever was at it. And they were Slovenian.

Walter Ostanek (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Ostanek), Canada’s “Polka King” and three-time Grammy winner, is also Slovenian.

Like crni, I also don’t particularly care for Polka music. But I do really like Avsenik–especially their waltzes. They are beautiful and relaxing–and often sung about Slovenia. :)

Well, I actually voted for you in the ‘best weblog focused on a single country or region’ cat. and for petite in the best weblog category without being asked !
This joke at pesticide is rather strange. it involves the french also. We should prove some solidarity : vote for ceteris paribus, french, in the ‘best new weblog category’. These guys at pesticide are trying to win here too.
I was well ahead in the best political category, but these northern-irish folks at slugger o’toole are now winning. But I can only say theirs is really better than my blog). Looks like I’m going to finish without a pajama.

Tsk tsk, Mike! What will your wife say when she finds out thta you are relinquishing your chance at Glory for the sight of a pettite british chick living in Paris, dressed in a satin pajama? Beware the wrath of a Slovenian woman!

After the storm, meybe you can et a job at this company.

I’m feeling rather relieved as I didn’t even possess any satin pyjamas and I’d like to back away from my rather rash promise with some dignity.

    Vote Carniola!

Their first post didn’t quite succeed as comedy, and ended up quite charmless, but I think this one is funny.

I liked the first article (to me it was merely an amusing strategy that backfired–not really mean-spirited). But the second one is just a hack job of Drepank’s brilliant piece. Nothing original coming from Pestiside’s article. The only work the author truly did was throw in a careless Balkan reference (like in the first article where the author presumed Slovenia was south rather than west of Hungary) and omit or replace all ‘Slovenian’ terms with the controversial and unappealing ‘Slovene’.

I have to give him props though for reading the comments here and mentioning crni’s sharp jibe!

I think to be allowed to not just compete, but even vote, one should provide one’s photo wearing satin pyjamas to the jury. That’d be the only fair thing to do, and results could be quite surprising.

The photos could be accessed on a subscribing service, which revenue would be distributed among those without satin pyjamas so that they could buy that precious garment and join the show the following year.

    Ne?

by Heck on February 1, 2005 at 1:30 pm

  • 28

    * The jury, of course, would be made up of the previous edition winners, their only task being the receipt of the mentioned photos — and much amusement to be had by them all.

    Hi :)
I have an off-topic question. What is the deference between Slovenian and Slovene? Why is Slovene controversial? Or is it only on the internet? What have I missed here? As far as I know (and have been taught), the two terms are equal, but Slovene is prefered because it is shorter? Any suggestions?

    Thanks for answers :)

Hi Nusa: There have been a lot of arguments on this site about which is the correct term. I’m working on a post that will deal exclusively with the subject, and will put it up as soon as I finish gathering info.

by Michael M. on February 2, 2005 at 12:15 pm

  • 31

    Thanks :) I’m looking forward.

Btw, the lecturers from the Department of English (Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana) say that there is no difference. However, Slovene is preferred. There is just one rule: use only one term, not both.

Oh, and sorry for the terrible spelling in my previous post ;)

I have an off-topic question. What is the deference between Slovenian and Slovene? Why is Slovene controversial?

Nusa: The professors at the Faculty have it right. There is no difference and Slovene is preferred. The whole thread discussing this issue is here:

Are people from Slovenia called Slovenes or Slovenians?”

I wasn’t in the least entertained by the Drepank post.  I was outraged out this simpleton’s post, Croatia was assisted by Budapest by secret clandestine military aid during the Yugoslav wars and was a booster of Croatia’s entry into NATO and a supporter of its entry into the EU.  Let’s not confuse ourselves, just irresponsible writing is not "fun" or light-spirited and could have resulted in a major military buildup by Budapest and I believe both those countries would have been replused.
