The Economist’s 2005 quality-of-life index. (Click to expand)
According to The World in 2005, Slovenia is the 27th greatest country in our solar system, just behind Germany and France and ahead of Britain and South Korea. Ireland is the most awesome country in the known galaxy, followed by Switzerland and Norway. In fact, European countries nearly swept the top ten. Only Australia (#6) prevented a total rout. Interestingly, though, none of the so-called "big three" made it into the top ten — or even the top twenty.
The Economist Intelligence Unit used the following factors to determine their scores:
You can read all about their methodology here. [pdf] In the meantime, many Slovenes will be happy to see that the country is comparable to Germany and France, outranks Britain, and is well ahead of Croatia, which is nestled between Poland and Turkey at spot 49. Croatians, in turn, can take comfort in the fact that Serbia-Montenegro is all the way down in 84th place — and behind Albania. If Serbs can recover from their collective heart attack, they can find solace in the fact that they’re ahead of Bosnia-Hercegovina. And Bosnians can be proud of the fact that, despite hosting Europe’s most destructive war since WWII, they’re still ahead of Russia and 17 other countries.
Of course, studies like this don’t matter too much, except as talking points. You could also do a study to find the world’s most greatest color by measuring how often it appears in clothes and buildings, how people rate it, if it’s natural or man-made, etc… In the end, all it boils down to is personal preference.
I like purple.

Total BULL! Italy so much ahead of Germany - oh c’mon! We all know Italy - just think of their south. Plus… US ahead of Canada…LOL… that’s funny!
Italy is the best! Italy has everything - beautiful nature, wonderful towns, not to even mention their excellent food and wine and the best coffee in the world! Italians know how to enjoy life and they know the delight of “dolce far niente”.
“dolce far niente”
A sladzije ni to!

Really, we don’t realize how nice it is to live in our country. I wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else in the world.
Just look at Mike, even he came to Slovenia, rather than stay in the us of a. I bet he doesn’t regret it a bit, aldough slovenian road traffic is a little more demanding that us traffic
I love Slovenia and even though I live in
Canada I would be back in flash if I won
a lotto. It should be higher up than 27
Italy is a joke!
This is a country hastily strung together in the 19th century where the north hates the south and vice versa, corruption and poverty is rife and political instability is normal.
This is a country that was humiliated by Greek soldiers on donkeys in ww2 and almost suffered the same fate at the hands of a tribe of Ethiopians.
And to top it all off Slovenia beat Italy in the recent world cup qualifier.
Slovenia is the greatest country in the world.
I have visited many countries but always look forward to coming home to Slovenia because it has beautiful women, great scenery, fantastic food and drink and a good quality of life. Even former Jamaican world champion sprinter Merlene Ottey moved to Slovenia to live.
Slovenians just don’t realize how lucky they are!
Andrej, you’re too serious (like Germans). Life is not only about work and fighting.
David
Yes, Slovenia seems like the best country in the world (certainly, to me). But why must everyone know this? This (i.e. the world finding out) can only hurt us.
Think…
Mass tourism (do you want Ljubljana and Bled to always be packed like Venice and Prague)
Mass immigration
Extremely expensive property
(i.e. impossible to own)
Jealousy and ill-will on part of others
I’d rather nobody know about the nearest thing to heaven that I know of.
As I step around the snot all over the new walking street, where cars frequently compete with pedestrains for room, I have to wonder: I like this place. But why do most people I see have such poor respect for their town?
I see drunks urinate all over an old church almost every Friday!
Heh, I even have a video of a river of piss, taken from a recent festival, that flows between the main church, and the museum building.
I live across from it, and it did wreak… Until the guy upstairs sent some rain to save some skateboarding kids from, (unknowingly), frolicking around in it.
Drives me nuts sometimes! :p
Dr. Shim: Indeed, the drunkiness and graffiti has to stop. Too many take what they have for granted…
Hmm… I’m surprised nobody has brought up yet Slovenia’s extremely high suicide rate.
suicide happens when people cant learn to
be failures with style like others south
of them (not naming any countries)
Too high standards…all or nothing attitude?
Lack of courage and/or friends?
Cheating wives?
Alcoholism.
Slovenia: #1 in the world in consumption per capita.
you are right on with those insights.
here in Toronto alot of people just
dont care if they cant keep up appearances
that cost alot of money. They just enjoy
life. But I’ve seen people over by Celje
who had to have the latest CD latest
computer whatever.its all or nothing
attitude and booze which is a killer.
They want so bad to keep up…er..catch up with the Jones’ (aka Italy and, especially, Austria).
Ever have this happen in a conversation with a native Slovenian?
blank: Man, Slovenia is heaven. You guys don’t know how lucky you are! My future is here, for sure.
Native Slovenian: What? You are crazy. We make a third less than what Austrians make. I want to go live in Australia or Canada..can you help me?
blank: Look at these mountains! Look at these beautiful girls everywhere!
Native Slovenian: We are too small. And anyway, Slovenian women are notoriously difficult to get; they want everything. Canada is big and has everything, including mountains. You can go to Vancouver…
blank: The distance from Toronto to Vancouver is farther than from Ljubljana to Moscow.
Native Slovenian: Oh crap…
I would miss my favorite roti shop
if I move ed there for good as well
as the young and restless.they dont have good
soaps there
rats , beat by the Jerries again !!
If only people really began to do something with all these old houses, too! The tourism would sky rocket.
It might just have to do with a poor self-image, in connection with the lack of the latest Jeans. Hell, I use mine for painting the house! (That’s how little I care about the dumb things.)
Slovenians are so arrogant and self-righteous.
They complain about their pay, yet they earn three times more than people who live in the former communist countries of central and eastern europe. They talk about the high standards of living in America, Australia, western europe, etc yet when they get there they realize its not what they expected. Sure people earn more money, but the cost of living is higher and the quality of life is not that great.
Wake up Slovenia! You have a great country.
I agree with all the comments on how Slovenes do not appreciate what they have. (The grass is always greener…)
I am looking to relocate to Slovenia next spring. Any available info on finding a job would be much appreciated.
What do you have to offer Slovenia?
If you are looking foor a job it would be grat to know what you do…
Its UK NOT Britain
This is a fake… Slovenia is probably on 127th place…
i like slo very much, only problem is the language.
