Oslobodjenje
The Oslobodjene building in Sarajevo.

The Sarajevo Survival Guide was written between 1992 and 1993, during the early years of The Siege of Sarajevo. (Windows Media required) It’s written as a mock guidebook, with information about everyday life in the besieged city and a grimly sparse cookbook. (Offerings include garden snails and mayonnaise with no eggs.)

The siege of Sarajevo lasted almost as long as the entire First World War. In fact, at nearly four years, it qualifies as the longest siege in the history of modern warfare. This page has some poignant pictures from the battle of Sarajevo by American photojournalist Roger Richards. He also made a movie about the siege: Sarajevo Roses. (Clips can be seen here: broadband / 56k modem )

Finally, the Sarajevo Survival Map has an index of the key places in the city during the siege, some of the things that happened there, and includes some small illustrations of all of them.

(Thanks novala!)
