Harpers_slovenia
The August 2004 edition of Harper’s featured a Slovenian rhyme.

Slovenia made a brief appearance in the August issue of Harper’s Magazine. If you don’t know it, Harper’s is America’s “oldest continuously published monthly magazine.” It’s also continuously outstanding. You can find it in some Slovenian bookstores, but at a relatively high price. Having it delivered to Slovenia costs about 8.000 SIT ($41) per year.

Only slightly less well-known is the wonderful webzine The Sneeze, which (among other things) has been collecting schoolyard rhymes from around the world. In late January, I submitted this classic of Slovenian poetry to The Sneeze:

[Ime] se pa joÄ?e,
Kaj mu je?
HlaÄ?ke ima polulane,
Sram ga je.

A few months later, I was shocked to see that Harper’s had published some of the schoolyard rhymes, including the Slovenian one.

But now you know how a dirty Slovenian children’s rhyme got published in over 200,000 issues of America’s oldest (and possibly greatest) magazine. It’s a proud moment for me.
