Algae on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast, near Koper.
When large patches of algae appear on the Adriatic Sea, Slovenes say morje cveti. (The sea is blooming.) There are a variety of reasons for algal blooms, among them temperature, pH, pollution and salinity. This year the Istrian coast bloomed for a while, although now it’s apparently clear again.

Poreč, Croatia.
I’ve never seen this type of algae, but it appears occasionally in the Adriatic. From what I’ve heard, it’s supposed to be disgusting to touch. It also attracts jellyfish, which Slovenes refer to as meduza. Needless to say, the algae and jellyfish make for unpleasant summer swimming conditions.

Rovinj, Croatia.
Sometimes a nasty cycle can develop. The algae suck the oxygen out of the water, fish and other aquatic critters suffocate, the dead fish provide further sustenance for the algae, and back to the beginning. Luckily, algae generally have a very short lifespan. And the Adriatic returns to normal.
