Triglav: The Game

triglav_the_game
A screenshot from the Javascript game Triglav.

When Slovenes hear the word Triglav (literally “three heads”) they probably think of the 2.864-meter-tall mountain of the same name. It’s Slovenia’s highest peak and an important national symbol. There’s even an old saying about having to climb Triglav in order to become a true Slovene.

Triglav the game, on the other hand, is a free RPG you can play in your browser. (I had problems with Firefox, but none with IE.) You can play for free by clicking here. Just select “arcade mode” or “career mode” to begin.

And no, the mountain and the game have nothing to do with each other.

Funny, in their FAQ they say TRIGLAV means “of three things” in slavic mythology. Someone should set them straight.

BTW, check out www.wordcount.org and type in “carniola” :)

Originally, Triglav was something that is “of three things”. It was a deity of Slavic people who lived at the Baltic Sea in ancient history. Here’s a description of that god from a 1155 chornicle (pretty old, ey?):
“The God Triglav simulacrum had three golden heads. A veil covered his eyes and mouth. The three heads represented his three dominations: heaven, earth, and underworld.” Check out the site: freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~catshaman/23erils2/0trinity.htm
So, that FAQ isn’t that wrong.

Well “of three things” and “having three heads” is still not quite the same to me. “Tri” means three and “glav” is plural for “glava” - meaning head so “having three heads” would be a more proper translation. Whatever those heads represent is then a different issue.

i agree with both of you. i mean, it’s pretty hard to find the exact meaning or origin of old words.
it’s funny though, how they came up with triglav for the name of a game that has nothing to do with it. miha, i’m amazed - how do you find all this stuff related to slovenia?

and yeah, the game graphics are good.

I make sacrifices to Triglav.. and he rewards me. Actually, I stumble on to a lot of it by chance, or people tip me off to interesting stuff… like crni just did. (Thanks for the link, crni! I will sacrifice a goat in your name tonight.)

Heh heh, nice. I will sleep peacefully, knowing that Triglav protects me. Wish me luck, going to Providence Canyon, Redneckville, GA.
