Slovenia is a gas station on the way to Croatia

Kurier.at has some cartoons poking fun at the incoming EU members. The jokes about Slovenia are:

* Slovenia is a gas station on the way to Croatia
* The coast is big enough to comfortably fit a single ice cream stand
* Thanks to the country’s size, you can ski into the ocean
* Slovenes are horse thieves…
* who obnoxiously change the names of their towns to match their stolen loot (refers to a dispute over Lipizzan horses.)
* they are famous for their "lovely" wine

I don’t know. I think a lot of this would be a bit more funny if, say, 47% of Austrians didn’t once admit to "some degree of racism" or if 70% didn’t say there would be problems in Austria if the minority population increased. (source) The fact that many Austrians really do look down on Easterlings makes it difficult for things like this to come across as the friendly poke-in-the-ribs it was (probably) intended to be.

Also, the Estonia page is flat-out stupid.

    saw you’ve signed on over at “lost in transit”…welcome!
    ah, slovenia. whenever i start to feel sorry for myself, explaining again that the czech republic is not “in prague” or “part of the soviet union”, i will try to be strong and remember that at least cz.r. is big enough that i can point to it on most maps.
    anyway… nice to find you.

    Gee, those comics are not funny. I too have trouble seeing this as a poke in the ribs. It’s scary, really. Particularly if one considers that a number of these countries once were part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
