Glorious Moments in Slovenian Soccer: Part Two

acimovic_goal.JPG
Slovenia celebrates Acimovic’s miraculous goal.

Who: Milenko Acimovic
What: Slovenia vs. Ukraine
Where: Ljubljana, Slovenia
When: November 1999
Why: Euro 2000

It doesn’t get any better than this one.

It’s the first leg of the Euro 2000 play-offs, and Slovenia and Ukraine are tied 1:1. With just six minutes left in the game, Milenko Acimovic bangs a 50-meter shot straight into the goal. It’s a wonder to behold. And as an added bonus, the Ukrainian goalkeeper dramatically rolls into the goalpost after he fails to stop the kick.

Slovenia won the game 2:1.

Beautiful shot. The percentages on a mid-field hit like that have to be astronomically small.

Is this “soccer” related to the popular European game of foopball, or is it a Slovenia only thing?
