Glorious Moments in Slovenian Soccer: Part One

milan_osterc_goal.JPG
Milan Osterc scores against Romania in spectacular fashion. Click for the video.

Who: Milan Osterc
What: Slovenia vs. Romania
Where: Ljubljana, Slovenia
When: November 2001
Why: World Cup 2002 Qualifying Match

You have to be a masochist to cheer for the Slovenian national team, but occasionally they can fill your heart with joy. Milan Osterc’s goal against the favored Romanians eventually put Slovenia in the 2002 World Cup and ranks as one of the most memorable moments in the team’s brief history. I think everyone watching (including Milan Osterc) was surprised that the ball plopped into the net the way it did. It was a pass to center that somehow transformed into a goal along the way.

Slovenia won the match 2:1. You can read the BBC’s report of the game here.
