“Tourists” by Ukrainian artist Oleg Dergachov.

In January 2004, exactly 68,392 foreign tourists came to Slovenia, according to the Slovenian Statistical Office. The Italians remained the biggest group of visitors, followed closely by Croatians. Allow me to present you with a table:

Foreign Visitors to Slovenia, Jan. 2004
Tourist Arrivals Country of Origin
17,358 Italy
17,143 Croatia
7,514 Austria
4,353 Germany
1,953 United Kingdom
1,143 Russia
1,101 United States
122 Baltic States
37 New Zealand

Two things surprise me about this information. The first is that there are so few Austrians, given that they are so close and so full of euros. The second thing is that Croatia is, despite some intense spats, very nearly Slovenia’s most important source of tourism. As you can see, Croatians were just 200 tourists shy of being number one. That’s a good thing to keep in mind the next time you hear a Slovene complain about their neighbors to the south.
