How to Swear in Slovenian

Slovenes curse a lot. Pretty much all the time. And yet they love to point out that their language doesn’t have many homegrown curses. Most curses, they’ll proudly tell you, were imported from the Balkans, where swearing is an art form carried out by professionals.

So, there are only a few Slovene curses. A long time ago there were a bunch, like 300 kosmatih medvedov! (300 hairy bears) or Da bi ti vse krave crknile! (I hope your cows drop dead) but they eventually went extinct. Unfortunately.

These days, most Slovenian insults have to do with things someone will do to your mother, or things you should do to your own mother, or some variation thereof. It’s hard to keep it all straight sometimes.

Luckily, Insultmonger.com has an exhaustive database of insults in over 133 languages, including Slovenian.

To see the Slovene curses, go here: The Swearasaurus: How to swear, insult, cuss and curse in Slovenian. (warning: vulgar content)

If you think they’re bad (and they are) go check the Serbian ones, which are infinitely worse. (warning: ultra-vulgar content)
