Antique Maps of Carniola

austriacarniola.gif

I like maps. No, seriously. I do. I especially enjoy the ones that are old and have dragons on them and are full of mistakes. The more inaccurate, the better. Take the map above, for example. It’s called Karstia, Carniola, Histria et Windorum Marchia and it was made in Amsterdam in 1640 by Johann Janssonius.

That’s Slovenia you see, in case you didn’t recognize it.

You might notice that Istria looks like it’s on steroids. It’s not sharp and narrow, but a bit too big and bulky. Compare it to this photo of the Istrian peninsula to see the difference.

But it’s still a great map. And for about 147.730 SIT ($790) it can be yours.

If you’re into this kind of stuff, you can see (and buy) a lot more antique maps of Austria/Slovenia/Croatia here.
