In a little town called Crna na Koroskem (literally “Black on Carinthia”) Slovenes gather every year to celebrate the memory of King Matjaz, whose greatest accomplishment was being swallowed by a mountain. (Slovenes really like tragic heroes.) According to legend, King Matjaz is only sleeping and once his beard grows a certain length he will wake up and return to the world of the living. And then Slovenes will be happy again.

In the meantime, Slovenes need to prepare for his arrival. Last weekend, they gathered for the 12th time in “Black on Carinthia” where they constructed snow sculptures in his honor. Really nice things like this:

King Matjaz Vomits — Sponsored by Union Beer! (Only kidding)

Most people build castles, but you can find all kinds of great and odd stuff. Like these alien cocoons, for example:

Who would have known a beauty this immense?

Or even a little bit of communist propaganda:

Che lives! Death to fascism!

There is a great picture gallery of all the castles and creations on this page. Go check it out!
